He developed a drinking problem during Scott's childhood, and only a few months after moving his family to Beacon Hills, during a drunken argument with Melissa, he accidentally caused Scott to fall down the stairs, leaving him severely concussed.
Melissa threw him out and enlisted Noah Stilinski's help in ensuring Rafael kept away. He moved San Francisco and had almost no contact with his son over the following years, due to his guilt over what had happened.
He returned to Beacon Hills in the Autumn 2011 school semester, to investigate The Darach Murders.
