Omicron Military

Overview

There are four official branches of the Omicron Military: Army, Marines, Navy, and DOMAIN. Each branch follows a specific ranking system, has specific identifying colors, and unique uniforms for various occasions and jobs within each branch.

Omicron Army

Overview

The Omicron Army is headed up by the General of the Army. While the Prime Minister acts as Commander-in-Chief of sorts, they work directly with the General of the Army in military matters. The army was formed in 2650 originally as a militia. It was made formal in 2699 in concurrence with the Mutual Peace Act of the Alliances. Despite the army being the army of Omicron, they work solely under the government within the jurisdiction of the Oliveaux Cluster (the main area the humans inhabit). As alliances were formed, however, this was extended into the rest of the Main Sector.

DOMAIN

Overview

D.O.M.A.I.N. is a pseudo-military organization that was created in 3175 by Prime Minister Margaret Croft. General Robert Henson was the first official commander of DOMAIN upon Croft's appointment of him in 3190. Because DOMAIN is made up all branches of the military, they have no official rank system, but for those exclusively joining DOMAIN, the Marine ranking system is used. For more extensive information on DOMAIN, see the related article.

Omicron Marines

Overview
The Omicron Marines were organized in 2668 mainly to help bolster the numbers within the navy with soldiers and, at the same time, provide the naval officers with more protection. Marines are soldiers that serve on ships. While the navy typically makes up the ships' operational crew, marines are also allowed in these positions. Most marines are involved with ship security, however. Marines are the first to be deployed to planets. They have several different groups, but the most common and most used are the ground regiments. They also have a specialized group of fighter pilots specifically trained to fly within planets' atmospheres and attack ground targets.
Ranks
(See Omicron Army Ranks) *Marines use the same ranking system as the army; however, they only serve on ships. Once they reach captain rank, Marines can choose between the army and navy if they wish to. A marine beyond the rank of captain either works a desk job or oversees the other marines, which do not require many people. Most marines choose the navy as they are used to being on ships and have the know-how to command them. At one time, marines only have one (1) general, two (2) lieutenant generals, three (3) major generals, and four (4) brigadier generals. Most officers make it to colonel but never progress beyond that.

Omicron Navy

Overview

The Omicron Navy was founded in 2647 upon the humans claim upon Scargil and is considered the premier branch of the military. The navy is responsible for all governmental and military space transportation and missions. They also oversee the Trans-Quad Transportation Company (the public transportation system within the quadrant) and maintain the Intersystem Transit Lines. In addition to these, they also run most all of the military space stations with the help of the marines. The navy is broken up into fifteen fleets with the third fleet being the leader and commanded by the current Admiral of the Navy. In addition the fleets, there are also four squadrons of fighters that consist of seven single-maned fighters each. The elite group and leader is the Blue Squadron followed by Red, Green, and Yellow Squads.

Uniform Information and Etiquette

Full Uniforms

Formal Dress Uniforms
Formal Dress Uniforms by R. H. Stevenson
  • Decoration varies. The lower in rank, the less decoration; the higher in rank, the more.
  • Covers are required no matter what.
  • Displayed sash colors are preferred; however, there are some exceptions (i.e., when a regalan, eldevian, or lorav DOMAIN officer wears a formal dress uniform, they are allowed a green, red, or blue sash, respectively).
  • Straight legged pants can be worn with dress uniforms, but most choose to wear boots as it differentiates from formal everyday wear.
  • Name tags are not worn with dress uniforms.
  • Because most marines do not get past the rank of colonel (if they do not switch to army or navy), the uniforms are not as decorated.
Formal Everyday (Ranking Officers)
Formal Everyday Uniform by R. H. Stevenson
  • Long coats are another choice (as seen on the marine), either buttoned up in cold climates or open anywhere. The colors of the coats match the jackets, along with the same insignias on the lapels and shoulder boards.
  • Decoration varies (DOMAIN uniform is that of an admiral or general, though the rank pin indicates captain. Rank pins also denote which branch the officer belongs to due to officers of either of the three branches to join).
  • Both straight-legged pants and pants tucked into boots are acceptable for military officers.
  • All covers are optional for wearing full time. However, military officers tend always to wear them unless indoors for extended periods.
  • Prime ministers usually never wear a cover unless going to a military function where a dress uniform is not needed. Dress uniforms require a cover.
  • These uniforms are for the rank of captain and above. The ranks listed are the highest ranks one can achieve.
  • Belt insignias vary. Any variations are accepted.
  • The highest rank a marine can get to is general, but there is only one general at a time (their uniform is shown here).
  • Prime Ministers often choose not to wear their formal everyday wear unless attending a meeting or event that would warrant one.
Casual Everyday
Casual Everyday Uniforms by R. H. Stevenson
  • Enlisted officers uniforms, i.e., the soldiers (army, DOMAIN) and those not serving aboard long-voyage ships (navy, marines, DOMAIN).
  • Cadets wear these as their main uniforms, but with no rank pins.
  • Rank pins and name tags are worn.
  • Covers are required.
Off Duty
Off Duty by R. H. Stevenson
  • Usually worn by those under captain's rank while off duty, but that’s not a rule.
  • Also used during regular training.
  • Pants can either be cargo or not. No rule, just preference.
  • Many officers tend to wear the shirts to sleep in.
  • Three shirts are allowed per officer. Replacement shirts must be obtained through the quartermaster.
  • Covers not required.
Flight Suits
Flight Suits by R. H. Stevenson
  • Helmets with a tactical visor are optional. Tactical visors allow pilots to get live intel on whatever ship they are currently looking at that the ship’s instruments could not do while locked onto another target.
  • Docking Bay/Hangar operators always wear a navy colored uniform regardless of if they serve with the navy or DOMAIN. Typically they are engineers/maintenance workers.
  • The numbers on the Docking Bay/Hangar Operator indicate which hangar they work in.
  • The ‘OM’ pin indicates that they are solely navy.
  • The colored bar below the rank pin indicates which squadron they belong to (in the example’s case, the Blue Squadron).
Navy Variants
Navy Variants by R. H. Stevenson
  • Petty officers and warrant officers do not serve on long-voyage vessels, but rather on regularly docking vessels.
  • The alternate flight suits are for naval use only.
  • Crewmen are considered enlisted; therefore, they wear different uniforms even though they can perform some of the same tasks as NCOs.
  • NCO uniforms are meant to be comfortable yet official-looking. Straight legged pants can be worn, but most do not.
DOMAIN Variants
DOMAIN Variants by R. H. Stevenson
  • As opposed to the DOMAIN formal uniform shown previously, this one is correct in the fact that it is what the commanding officer of DOMAIN would wear.
  • The alternate uniform is mostly worn by those of the rank of captain and under, though that is not a rule. The color on the chest signifies what their role is (*see below for more info).
  • Stealth suits are lightly armored, though very flexible. They are used for infiltration missions or anything requiring stealth tactics. They are made of a weave that absorbs sound and deadens light, making them silent and next to impossible to see in the dark. Only those trained are allowed to use them. Night vision is built into the goggles.
  • Combat suits are considered to have medium protection (as opposed to army issued heavy armor). The material of the pads deflect blaster fire from a distance, but it does not hold up well up in close combat.
Army Combat Variants

  • While cold armor does provide armored protection, it is mainly used to fight off the cold. Only the vest has armor plating.
  • Desert combat gear is considered light armor and is used mostly as long-range tactical gear.
  • If close-range combat is required, regardless of the situation, heavy armor is used. The ribbed design allows for layers of protection beyond that of normal plating.
  • Light armor and desert armor almost go hand in hand, except that light armor is used more often than any other armor.
Marine Variants
Marine Variants by R. H. Stevenson
  • Naval uniforms are worn by the marines serving on long-voyage vessels.
  • Combat armor is used by marines both in the navy and the army. It is similar to the DOMAIN combat armor because of its effectiveness.

Cover Etiquette
When to remove:
  • Covers belonging to any uniform are taken off in the presence of a ranking officer
  • When indoors, unless the officer is presently giving orders
  • In the presence of the prime minister (the prime minister outranks everyone)
  • When dealing with civilians one on one, i.e., when informing them of the loss of a loved one
  When to wear:
  • When presently giving orders (this is not so much a rule as it is a common thing to do)
  • Outdoors
  • When dealing with anyone outside the military, both civilians and those with authority (i.e., government officials, foreign leaders, and dignitaries)
  • While on duty unless the aforementioned removals apply
  • Required to wear with a dress uniform (removal based on rank does not apply with dress uniforms)
All of these “rules” should be looked at individually as situations arise. Sometimes a cover should be worn; sometimes it should not. Use discretion.
