Faerie Dragon
A faerie dragon is a Seelie Fey creature that resembles a tiny, brilliantly-colored miniature Dragon. They are intelligent creatures with a typically Seelie sense of humor, and their limited innate magical abilities are almost wholly used to play pranks on unsuspecting mortals, fellow fey, or each other.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Like true dragons, faerie dragons are winged sauropods with four legs, two wings, and a tail. Unlike true dragons, faerie dragons never grow beyond the size of a pelican, with wingspans under 3 feet in length for all but the eldest.
Growth Rate & Stages
Faerie dragons not only grow larger as they age, but also shift hues through the color of the rainbow. On the Material Plane, the youngest and smallest (typically the size of a newly weaned kitten) have red scales from birth through roughly five years of age. In the second half of their first decade, their scales begin to turn orange, then yellow during their early teens. Their scales shift color again approximately once every decade; a fully purple faerie dragon is at least fifty years old. Of course, these colors appear reversed through the spectrum of light in the Spring Court and Summer Court, and the capricious nature of time in the Feywild may change their growth pattern slightly.
Ecology and Habitats
Faerie dragons thrive in moderately warm environments. They prefer the Spring Court and Summer Court, though they are occasionally seen in the Autumn Court as well. During the spring and summer, they can more frequently be seen traveling through the fey-windows of forests in the Material Plane. They are a common summer site in the Gaeno Woods, and appear uncommonly in the Eldar Wood as well.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Travelers in and near the Feywild often report faerie dragons' love of sweets. Anyone carrying candied nuts, fruits, or sweetmeats through their territory can expect to draw a faerie dragon's attention. In places on the Material Plane with strong fey affinity, giggles of faerie dragons have been seen working together to steal pies and cakes larger than their own bodies. Faerie dragons are also thought to be able to synthesize nutrients from the sound of others' laughter.
Behaviour
Faerie dragons are intensely social animals, typically living in packs of five to ten. A group of faerie dragons is called a "giggle." When traveling with their pack, they exhibit mischevious behavior more frequently than usual in an effort to amuse each other.
