Argaun

Argauns live in the areas surrounding the central Mountain chain of the Highpeaks. The Argaun people have a very tough exterior both physically and socially. Due to living in the hills and mountains surrounding the Heissermount, they have a very no-nonsense and practical way of thinking and doing things. Preparing for the long winters leads them to have a very strong work ethic and the harder and longer one works, the more an Argaun will value your friendship.   Argauns tend to be short to medium height, with females being stockier than other cultures. Hair color ranges from ruddy blonde to black and eye color is typically hazel or blue. Men sport short, but thick beards and favor elaborate moustaches. Females grow their hair long, but keeping with tradition, usually wear it in a bun.

Subcultures

Diaspora - Argaun

Bussen

Bussens inhabit the Tschilin Valley on the eastern slopes of the Heissermount and to the west of Lake Moll. Bussen Argauns are the most agrarian of their culture group. They have a knack for planting and understanding weather patterns. They tend to be the most down to earth of the Argauns as well and value large nuclear family structure. They are distrustful of people from urban areas. Bussens follow Argaun features save for their skin tones tend to be darker and worn as they typically spend long days in the fields.

Heisserhertin

The Heisserhertin live on the close edge of the eastern slopes of the Heissermount and usually live in scattered ranches or homesteads on the slopes. They have no significant town or city that they call home. They consider themselves the purest strain of Argaun. This lends their personalities to being even more insular than their other Argaun cousins and also means they are quite aloof. Very intollerant of outsiders, Heisserhertin are distrustful of individuals who they do not consider friends or family. Along with their Argaun features, the main difference is that a majority of both men and women have blonde hair and green eyes. Women wear their hair long as opposed to most Argaun females.

Passermanner

Passermanner inhabit the highly traveled Grosspass in eastern Argaun. Unlike their other Argaun cousins, the Passermen are more inclined to socialize with outsiders. This is mostly due to their proximity and control of one of the main trade routes across the continent heading east. They are always willing to talk, but with non-Argauns, this will mostly be business and small talk. They are highly independent compared to their cousins, but the immediate family is extremely important. The Passermanner Argaun are much more physically diverse than other of their Argaun cousins. This is due to their location and the greater amount of foreigners passing through their lands. Most other Argauns see the Passermanner as less 'pure' than other Argauns because of the mixed blood typically found among them causing this physical diversity.

Vaudish

The Vaudish inhabit much of the lands in southern Argau bordering with the [Frisians](https://www.worldanvil.com/w/orrus-Androkles/a/frisian-article). Most of the trade going through the western passes of the High Peaks moves through Vaudish lands. The Vaudish Argaun are the most cosmopolitan in relation to their cousins. Similar to the Passermanner, the Vaudish tend to socialize with outsiders more. Always trying to keep up with the current fashion and social trends, they tend to use their riches to look the part. The Vaudish tend to look at the other Argauns as backward and feel that the monetary wealth of their area should be used to help out the less fortunate. Similar to the Passermanner, the Vaudish tend to mingle with outsiders more leading to a more diverse set of physical attributes, although maybe slightly less so.

Don’t believe everything you hear son. The Argaun people may live in the mountains, but it will be just as difficult for them to engage us in the hills as it will be for us to engage them…. Yes, yes, I’ve heard as well that they are like mountain goats. That’s utterly ridiculous.
— Hauptmann Erik Shultz, palatinate of Bargo officer to a soldier before a humiliating defeat at the battle of Lachen
