Crown Prince

Overview

The Crown Prince of Éirigh is the heir apparent to the throne. Most often, they are the eldest son of the King, but it is not unheard of for the King to select another of his children as his heir. This may happen when the eldest son shows no interest in taking the crown, or if he fails to show promise in his early training and education.

Responsibilities

In his youth, the Crown Prince is given the finest education available, and is expected to gain a mastery of swordsmanship, Royal etiquette, and any other skills he has a natural inclination towards. When he reaches the age of 18-20, he typically serves as a member of The Royal Guard until the King feels the time is right to begin the transition of power. At this time, the Crown Prince will start assisting the King in his duties, gradually taking more responsibility until his coronation.

Oh I really like the idea that the king sometimes can choose a different one of his children than the eldest. I assume it's always a boy, though?

Another great question, thank you! I actually meant to include that historically, it has always been a boy, but there is no language in law that would prevent a woman or non-binary child from being chosen (which may come into play in the future).
