Cursed Emerald Ring of Fate
The Cursed Emerald Ring of Fate is an item which states quite plainly what it is. It is a ring made with an emerald that was cursed. The "of Fate" portion relates to the curse, and is not frequently explained because most people tend to actually seek out the ring when they hear what the curse is, regardless of repeated assurances that things will not end well for them.
To briefly summarize what is in fact a rather complex magical working, the curse is that whoever bears the ring for longer than a week or so shall "meet the grandest destinies of their fate." The majority of people seem to think this means that something grand will happen to them, that they shall become one of the movers and shakers of our world. What actually happens is that they have a typical week as it would have been whether they had the ring or not, and then the rest of their life becomes one long downward spiral of boredom at best, pain and suffering at worst.
As might be guessed, this ring was created by a wizard who suffered horribly in his high school career. His vengeance was to formally codify the typical wishes of those who are tormented as adolescents. Namely, that those who do the tormenting are often at the height of their power and authority, and typically do not end up in the best of places after high school due to not applying themselves.
A Brief History of the Ring
The ring has been in existence for approximately 300 years, created around the early 2000s, for the reasons stated above. The identity of the wizard who created it is unknown, but based on handwriting analysis of the note that accompanied it to its first target, it was a man, and he probably had a brief career as a doctor based on the sheer illegibility of the document. The ring was gifted to one Alvedig Beese, along with the note that he did not bother to read. At the time, Alvedig was a prominent member of the council of the king at the time. Before the month was out, he was a beggar on the street. It probably would have gone a little better if he hadn't been having affairs with three prominent military spouses. Lack of excessive behavior does tend to slow the progress of the ring. Elsa Danelius was another famous owner of the ring. She was the first to have it resized, and wore it proudly to her engagement party to the son of the overlord of Yng-tox. Her husband-to-be fell in love with her maid of honor, Elsa attempted to murder the both of them, and ended up as a faux wench in a cheap fish-and-chips shop in Prazigal. To date, there have been at least fifty owners of the ring, and each one holds on to it for longer than necessary, believing somehow that the magic involved is going to finally work out in their favor. Only two people have had the mental fortitude necessary to recover their former lives after getting rid of the curse. First, Hirkoa Hamilan. He was a singer/politician of Atazicolia who intentionally looked for the ring to bring himself fame. When the curse hit, his identity was stolen in a false prince internet scheme, a promotion at work was given to someone with the same name resulting in his being laid off to avoid confusion, and his girlfriend got amnesia and forgot who he was. When he refused to get rid of the ring, there was a massive fire resulting in the complete destruction of all documents proving who he was. After ridding himself of the ring and its curse, he joined the Thieves Guild and made use of the fact that no one could prove he even existed. And second, Judit Natalia. She was a semi-professional swamp witch who sought to use the ring against a client who wouldn't pay their bill. Unfortunately, she held on to the ring a little longer than was safe, and ended up chased out of her home by a swarm of mechanical bees. After dispossessing herself of the curse through a long and laborious process, she switched careers and became a scientist famous for designing mechanical wasps. At the present moment, it is one of several weapons being employed against Yng-tox's enemies.

Rarity
This ring is the only one of its kind. There have been many replicas created to mimic it, and indeed before its reputation became historically relevant there were any number of similar pieces of jewelry created alongside it. However, it is the only one that has quite the aura of malevolence.

The band and setting are platinum, I believe, although it is entirely possible that it is plain silver. The central stone is obviously an emerald, in an emerald cut. The surrounding stones, contrary to what might be assumed, are white sapphires. Sort of. There was some kind of arcane ritual involved and I think it is safe to assume that the stones are no longer entirely the same chemical makeup as they once were.
