Lumistratus

Trigger Warning: Graphic descriptions, death
"The pale colour, even from a distance, told her more than she needed to know. There was no need for her to get any closer and yet suddenly her feet were not her own. She hadn't seen her husband in over a month, but judging by the small clusters of light brown shapes scattered across his water-bloated form, he hadn't seen anything in almost as long."

At Home In The Nuskan Swamps

The swamps around Nuskan on P'Ache Micro were, for many millennia, home to a multitude of species both great and small, and counted in that number was over 100 different species of fungi.   Lumistratus (pronounced loom-ee-stah-tus), was by far the most common family of fungi found across the whole of the planet but was particularly common in swampy areas.

Death Shroud

The name for one of the most common varieties of lumistratus amongst Macrans was the 'death shroud mushroom', due in part to its lighter colouring, which Macrans associate with death, and its wide, flat or almost sunken cap and large gills which give the impression of sheets of fabric.
It has been hypothesised that the reason that the light colours are associated with death in Macran culture is because death shroud mushrooms are one of the primary decomposers on P'Ache Micro. They are commonly used by Decomposers in their work of returning the deceased to the earth, and so the image of a field of these mushrooms, with the remains of the dead slowly decomposing beneath them, could easily be the cause of the original connection between death and lighter, paler colours.

Extinction

After the Primians and the Macrans signed the second treaty, after The Second Micro Rebellion, the Primians started making a concerted effort to extract minerals from the oceans of P'Ache Micro. These efforts were made with no regard for the surrounding environment.   So, as the creatures which provided the lumistratus with their nutrients died off at a faster rate than they grew, and people moved off-planet for better opportunities, the fungi went slowly extinct. The last recorded specimen died in 2847 PT. Despite some small effort on the part of a handful of dedicated Macran scientists, any and all attempts to clone or reproduce it have failed.
