The Sarnish (sɑɹnɪʃ / sɑɻɳɪʃ)

Sarn [sɑɹn / sɑɻɳ] – the largest of the Mỳdri islands which abut the Gulf of Mỳdr and the northern Qh’ill strait. It is divided into nine shires: Drana [dɹɑnæ / dɻɑɳɑ], Grna [gɚnæ / gɚɳɑ], Hana [hɑnæ / hɑɳɑ], Hwarna [hwɑɹnæ / hwɑɻɳɑ], Ona [onæ / oɳɑ], Urna [uɹnæ / uɻɳɑ], Rana [ɹɑnæ / ɻɑɳɑ], Tsana [ʦɑnæ / ʦɑɳɑ], Wana [wɑnæ / wɑɳɑ]. Like most of the Mỳdri, Sarn is largely mountainous and rises quite high from sea level, except for the capital/gubernatorial region, Hwarna. Originally inhabited by proto-Kharnnes, it has subsequently been a colonized by Mỳdrians, then the Qh’énns, and during the Third Ptarshakkian-Qh’énnish War, it became part of the Ptien Midar, the Ptarshakkian occupied regions. Ancient subterranean structures in the voluminous mountain caverns, suggest that it was an early dwarven and/or Svoréin site—Yurayurai—predating the arrival of humans. It is believed by Yssian linguists that Sarn is cognate with Kharnne; further speculation has the origins of the Kharnnish people as being Sarn. In some reckonings, Sarn is considered a ninth barony of Qh'énnshaiyn, albeit one governed by either Lihgn or Dermrhein. It was semi-autonomous but under Dermrhein I control before it fell to Ptarshakk under Field Marshal Biwas ab'Daenae. Sarnish – is a dialect of Kharnnish with Qh’énnish and Mỳdrian influences. The names in the above entry after the slash are the Sarnish pronunciations. Retroflex consonants are common in Sarnish. Sarnish also refers to the people of Sarn.
