Daoshi (dɑoʃi)

Daoshi is the demonym for the people of Dhaoshee, their language, their culture. Lit., “Of the People of Dhaoshee.”   The Daoshi people are related to both the Tchaikréni and Kielik people. Whilst the languages Daoshi and Tchaikréni are largely mutually intelligible, the /r/-/l/ split serves as a shibboleth; Daoshi lacks a rhotic consonant and uses /l/ or omits the consonant in cognate words. Whereas Tchaikréni has both /r/ and /l/, often in free variation. The Daoshi refer to the Tchaikréni and their language as Klini.   It is believed that the Daoshi originated on the Far Western continent of Tcha where although the Tchaikréni and Kielik peoples have presence in Dhaoshee, the majority of their populations still reside in Tcha. As a people descended from the putative *Gzīel the Daoshi are the distant cousins of the Qhélssénnish peoples (Qh'énns, Kharnnes, Sarns, Hœmmé).

Naming Traditions

Family names

Only nobles have anything approaching a family or surname, and these are often regional toponyms that serve as the clan name.   Peasants and the vast majority of ethnic Daoshi are at best referred to by their region of birth: —— of Ietsk; —— of Slōenn, etc. (which is rendered by the suffix -(i)nyi: Ietskinyi and Slyennyi respectively).

Major organizations

Dhaōvsk—"sanctuary for the Daoshi" or "the sanctuary in Dhaoshee"—is the is euphemistic term for the oligarchs who are the ersatz rulers of the nation. The Oligarchs of Slōenn and the Oligarchs of Ebb-Ta distribute the fiefs that constitute the nation. They are secretive and rarely seen. Very few know exactly who among them is an actual oligarch, how they obtain the rank, or how many there are at any one time. The northwest of Dhaoshee is governed by the Slōennite Dhaōvsk (Dhaōvskyen /dʰɑoːvskjɛn/ the southeast is governed by the Ebb-Tavian Dhaōvsk (Dhaōvsktav /dʰɑoːvsktɑv/ naitonal emergencies are co-governed, with the Slennites generally holding more sway.   Various religious and magic academies, colleges, schools, and sanctuaries exist throughout the nation and are sustained by the work of the serfs bound to each individual fief. Most of the serfs are ethnic Daoshi.
