City of Snalesh ((Sna-lesh))
Demographics
Yuan-Ti make up the majority of the population of the city of Snalesh. This despite the fact that they are a minority population in the Swamps. Indeed, almost their entire population in the region is concentrated within the walls of the town. (55% of total population.) The Lizardfolk, who are the overall majority in the Swamps make up the second largest population group. (45% of total population) The remaining population is a mix of miscellaneous species, with an overrepresentation of Loxodon.
Government
The government of Snalesh is a representitive democracy, designed to represent the various factions which call the Snaleshi Swamps their home. Due to the importance of Snalesh, the assembly is also the closest thing the swamps have to a government.
The government is divided into two councils, known and the lesser and greater council. Collectively referred to as, "the assembly."
The lesser council is made up of the many freeholding clans of Snalesh. These clans each send one of their members to represent their interests on the lesser council. The lesser council is represented by a "speaker," who voices the collective opinion of this large body.
The greater council is made up of the 4 great clans. Each clan is designated one spot on the greater council. Traditionally, these 4 spots are filled by the heads of each clan.
Both legislative bodies must have majority agreement on a bill in order to pass any laws. In theory, this bill can be vetoed by an Avatar of Snalesh. Though this has never happened.
Industry & Trade
The refining of Drastrix Fruit into wine for consumption is the defining industry in Snalesh. The potency of this wine is dependent on it's age and the number of fruit originally used to create it. To create a wine of a corresponding sliver level, the brewer must pulp a number of Drastrix Fruit and let it sit for a number of years equivalent to the desired sliver level - cubed.
Infrastructure
Snalesh is a town built upon the only large hill in the heart of the swamp; atop which the tree of Snalesh sits. A large surge wall protects the town from the relentless changing of the tides, which the swamps are known for. The lower city is defined by large canals which act as the city streets. These canals transition to multi story elevated wooden walkways as one gets to the top of the hill.
Districts
Lower District
The lower district is defined by the canals which run through it's streets; these canals run the length between the surge wall and the dry land of the middle district. Here both great wealth and poverty can be found. Traders from exotic lands intermix with impoverished Yuan-Ti families eking out a living in the slums of Snalesh.
Middle District
The middle district is the area between which the canals end but before which the wooden walkways begin. Here Snaleshi and foreigner alike can enjoy hard compact ground, a luxury in this land. The district is broken up into four even quadrants, which are each separately governed by the four great clans. This district is also the home to most of the cities foreign residents and adventurers. As such, it is the most dynamic and diverse area of the city.
Upper District
The upper district is defined by multi story wooden buildings and elevated walkways which weave in and around the great tree roots which define this part of the city. The upper district is much smaller then the middle or lower district, but no less important. It is here that the government of the Snaleshi people can be found.
Guilds and Factions
The city is largely influenced and controlled by the four great clans of Snalesh. The Fire Clan, Water Clan, Earth Clan and Air Clan. These clans have their own home settlements, but their power is influential enough that they all collectively run Snalesh.
History
The settlement was built upon the hill which the avatar of the Spirit of Snalesh died upon; during the battle rebellion against The Destroyer. The hill would grow and prosper into modern Snalesh, thanks to the Tree of Snalesh. During this growth, the current government of the town would be born - a compromise between the greater and lesser clans to maintain the peace.
Natural Resources
The Drastrix Fruit is the primary resource of Snalesh. Tree of Snalesh is the only known source of this Node of Power. Outside of Snalesh, one unrefined fruit can go for 100 to 200 platinum.
