The pairing was an arranged marriage whose purpose was to boost the King's standing in the Kingdom of Bartol, and particularly in the East March, where people had been openly encouraging Alaria's mother Devonna Barrintel, the then-Duchess of Errestan to secede from the Kingdom.
The union did bring greater peace and stability to the Kingdom, though perhaps not as much in political terms as practical terms. For reasons no one could explain, Alaria seemed able to calm Raghnall's bouts of rage as well as the voices he heard in his head.
