Near the end of The Great Demon Wrath, Sylrieth's grandmother Vasati was cursed by a demon named Xustroth. This curse was for the first born son of her family to be sent to the Abyss when they reach the age of 11 (elvish) years old. Fortunately for her family, she was an only child with no plans to gain siblings. Soon after, Vasati moved to Sephra to wed her beloved Forled. When Vasati married, she had two daughters before her husband died of illness, allowing her to once again escape the curse. Her daughter Maelyrra, however, was not so lucky. Her first and only child was a son, Sylrieth. Though skeptical of the existence of the curse, she decided to seek help from many Wizards to help her son evade the curse, though none would assist. At the age of 11, he was immediately transported to the Abyss, where he spent a year of his life. After a year of searching, his parents were able to find someone to go into the Abyss to fetch their son, which was successful in the end, though left the young boy unhinged and severely weakened by Void magic and beings from the Void.
