Hazlik

The unquestioned ruler of Hazlan, Hazlik is a powerful evoker who seems bent on ensuring that none of his apprentices surpass him. Before the Grand Conjunction, Hazlik went so far as to ban anyone in the domain from studying magic except himself; for reasons known only to himself, he lifted the ban after the Grand Conjunction, but only so long as he is permitted to oversee all apprentices within the domain. He has a reputation for being controlling and paranoid--if the Eyes of Hazlik weren't evidence enough of that, he tends to arrange the deaths of any wizards who could possibly be perceived as challenging, threatening, or outshining him. The other wizards are more than eager to do the job for him, climbing over the bodies of anyone who stands in their way even though this puts them at risk of drawing Hazlik's attention in precisely the wrong way. Hazlik seems to enjoy playing his apprentices against each other. Unlike some of the more decadent darklords like Ivan Dilisnya and Ivana Boritsi, however, idle mind games don't appear to be an end in themselves for Hazlik. Rumor has it that he is constantly pushing himself to new magical discoveries, using potions to avoid sleep as much as humanly possible so that it will not rob him of time that he could be using in the pursuit of knowledge. There have been multiple instances of Hazlik summoning the city governors into his laboratory for meetings so that he doesn't have to interrupt his research for politics.
The one exception to Hazlik's general disdain for his apprentices is Eleni of Toyalis, an upjumped commoner for whom Hazlik seems to have genuine affection. She was previously a servant in a wizard's household, but when she displayed magical aptitude, Hazlik took her under his wing and allowed her to avenge herself against her former mistress in whatever way she liked. There are scandalous rumors about their relationship even though Hazlik is old enough to be her grandfather and has never shown any interest in women, and everyone is both disgusted and frightened by her rise to power--although never within earshot of the Eyes of Hazlik.

Hazlik's estate, Veneficus, sits between Toyalis and Sly-Var.
