The Miskatonic
The oldest and most prestigious arcane university in all of Prima Terra, the Miskatonic is a collegiate university dedicated to magical, academic, and bardic studies. Founded in the second age by Miskaton of Albion, the Miskatonic has been the centre of education in western Prima Terra since. Its historical and magical archives are amongst the most in-depth in the continent, containing information and magical artefacts from across the ages.
The university is made up of four colleges containing various academic departments, student accomodation, and leisure venues. The Miskatonic and its surrounding campus and non-university buildings within the city of Saunton is known as the Arcane Quarter. This area outside of the university is composed of taverns, arcane shops, and housing for graduates and professors.
The Miskatonic's alumni are amongst the most famous in Prima Terra, with famous arch-mages such as Mordenkainan, Tasha, Leomund, and Fizban. Court mages throughout the world are composed of the university's gradutes.
The Miskatonic is also responsible for the contined practice of organized magic following the collapse of the Sun Elf empire, preserving ancient spells and crafting new ones to replace lost knowledge.
Structure
The Miskatonic is composed of four arcane colleges, each with their own dean, and one arch-dean for the entire university who overees the entire administration. Although somewhat seperate, each college ultimately answers to the arch-dean and all funding is directed through the university itself, with some freedom of syllabus and education.
Colleges
Paladine College
The oldest existing constituent college, Paladine was founded in 979, 2e by High King Paladin of Kernow. This college has earned the reputation of being the centre of artificing, philosophy, eloquence bards, and science. The college holds a reputation of being for the 'elites' and inventors. Famous alumni include Mordenkainen, and at least four chancellors of the Eldrian Empire. The college currently has a partnership with the Republic of Gazzarit to fund technological research using magical means.Ravencroft College
Founded by Tasha, Ravencroft is the 2nd oldest college in the university. Based on flood plains of the Mair the college is effectively built into a swamp, with its arbetoriums preserving much of the ancient floodland and its wildlife even as the city has grown around it. A centre of natural study, the college has a dark reputation for necromancy, but its most important work is in conservation and understanding of magical creatures. The third oldest college, Wyvern college was founded in 2022, 2e by Arch-Dean Hashgaxor of the Crag. A centre of historical study and magical artefacts, the Wyvern College vaults house some of the oldest and most powerful magical items in all of Prima Terra. The college has a reputation of being acadmic and trains more academics and reserachers than the other college's combined. It is also considered one of the toughest college's to enroll with. Notable Alumni include Azura and Mertion Hampton.King's Patron
The newest college, it was founded by King Arathur III in 410, 3e to fund new training of war mages as part of his education missive. The college, although expensive, grants numerous scholarships. Regardless, it has gained the reputation of being for the elites of Prima Terra, with noble and well connected families using their influence to aid in entrance interviews for their children.Public Agenda
The Miskatonic publically advocates for magical education and safety. As a private educational institute, the Miskatonic frequently targets its services to young and talented mages, and its prestigious status makes it incredibly diffuclt to acertain entry. Regardless of this, the Miskatonic supports magical education around the continent, supporting smaller and cheaper outlets of magical education through loan of educators, equipment, and resources.
The Miskatonic also runs an asylum programme for East Marcian magic users, using local allies to help resuce people from the witchfinders and granting the more talented mages entrance to their colleges.
