Plot: The Shattered Sigil

Plot

The Tsardom of Kyrus is on the brink. Years ago, the royal family has been decimated by a chain of misfortunes: the Tsar's eldest son perished in war, two more were claimed by a freak avalanche, and his youngest, Bogdan, vanished, snatched by marauding Ogres in the Gap of Grief. Only Princess Sara remains, a solitary figure against the backdrop of a fracturing realm. As losses mounted, Tsar Vlad Svytloslaw, gripped by paranoia and despair, amended ancestral laws to allow his daughter to inherit the throne - a desperate bid to preserve his lineage. This unprecedented decision has drawn the ire of traditionalists within the royal court and the zealous Svozno Patriarchate, who view a female successor as a dire affront to the nation’s heritage.   The Svozno Patriarchate, guardians of the Divine Flame’s worship, are implacably opposed to Princess Sara. They are enraged not only by her prospective ascension but by her identity as a renowned Frost Maiden - a detail the Tsar sought desperately to conceal. The Patriarchate denounces her as a harbinger of doom, prophesized to extinguish the Divine Flame and, with it, the nation. Branded a heretic, Sara is at the heart of a brewing storm, with the church preparing for a holy war to safeguard the realm from what they perceive as her perilous influence.   In defiance, Sara has established the Ice Court, a sanctuary and training ground for the kingdom’s ostracized frost mages. Here, these mages are taught to harness their powers for the greater good, turning a feared and misunderstood element into a potent ally. This initiative represents a radical departure from tradition, championing adaptation and innovation in a land shrouded in ice - a move that stokes the fears of those devoutly wedded to the Divine Flame.   Amidst these tensions, there are whispers that the Tsar's last son, the lost heir, might still live, hidden in the Frost Wastes. A loyalist Commissar by the name of Kazimir Vodyn has began a search of him, driven by hope or folly to restore the direct male line and avert conflict. Yet, the implications of his possible return are as fraught with peril as they are with promise.   The stakes are high, the fate of an empire hangs in the balance. Who will you aid? And what will be sacrificed?

Resolutions

Ice Court Victory

In the aftermath of Tsar Vlad Svytloslaw's death, the power vacuum threatens to plunge Kyrus into chaos. However, the Ice Court, having garnered substantial support across the nation, stands firm against the uprising led by the Patriarchate. Under the leadership of Princess Sara, known as the Ice Princess, they not only quell the rebellion but also consolidate power effectively. The Ice Court’s mastery of frost magic proves decisive, turning the tide of conflict in their favor. With their victory, Princess Sara ascends to the throne, ushering in a new era where frost magic is revered rather than feared. Her reign marks a significant shift towards progressive governance, integrating the mystical arts into the fabric of Kyrusian society, thereby ensuring the stability and prosperity of her realm.

State Collapse

The death of Tsar Vlad Svytloslaw sets off a fierce power struggle between the Ice Court and the Patriarchate, with neither side able to secure a decisive advantage. As the conflict drags on, it wreaks havoc across Kyrus, leading to widespread devastation and societal breakdown. The central authority collapses, and the nation fragments into a patchwork of feuding duchies led by local Gospodars and Warlords who eventually ditched the war effort, now vulnerable to foreign invasion. In this power vacuum, lawlessness prevails, and the once-unified Tsardom devolves into a land of strife and factional warfare. Communities are left to fend for themselves amidst the ruins of a shattered nation, as the dream of a unified Kyrus under either the Divine Flame or the Ice Court’s frost fades into the harsh reality of endless conflict.

Patriarchate Ascendancy

As the struggle for succession intensifies following the Tsar's demise, the Patriarchate, deeply entrenched in its traditions and religious fervor, manages to outmaneuver the Ice Court and rally widespread support. Their campaign against Princess Sara’s supposed heresy resonates with the conservative populace, enabling them to seize control with overwhelming force. With Sara driven into exile, the Patriarchate swiftly transforms Kyrus into a theocracy. The new regime represses all forms of magic that is not fire, purging the land of what they deem as heathen corruption. Under their rule, the church’s doctrines penetrate every aspect of daily life, and the state becomes a reflection of the Divine Flame’s stern and unyielding dogma, promising salvation while enforcing submission.
