Gilford Arkanus
The Sovereign of Deceit
Gilford Arkanus (a.k.a. Gilligan, Desmond)
“Ok, yeah, I’ve never been here. Yeah, I’m making this up as I go. But watch, by the end of this, we’ll be running out with supplies and food that they willingly gave to us, and they’ll all be none the wiser. Come on, Leon, what’s the worst that can happen?”An amateur mage that worked as a con man-I mean fortune teller in Aestus. After making a living predicting people's lives for a while (some of which turned out to be true), he had to cut his career short when he accidentally botched an appointment with a dangerous government official. His escape route had him cross paths with the Windwell Guild, which he then joined as he had nowhere else to go. After an incident resulted in him posing as a prince, he now dresses as a member of royalty. The best, but at the same time worst liar of the party.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Tall and fast, but gets tired easily.
Body Features
Fair, white skin tone and long, blonde hair.
Special abilities
Gilford is talented in fire, ice, and electric-based elemental magic, and can cast devastating spells that cover a wide area with ease. However, his poor mana capacity is rather embarrassing for a mage, so he tries to finish a fight as fast as possible before anyone notices.
After spending a few days posing as a royal prince, he instead channels his magic into strengthening and minor healing spells, allowing him to support his friends from the back lines as they do most of the fighting. As bad as it sounds, he's actually helping out a lot more than he did before, especially since he doesn't consume as much mana anymore.
Apparel & Accessories
Gilford would typically wear purple robes with a single star displayed in the middle. Upon acquiring the clothes of royal family members, he will dress in more casual, yet (probably) expensively made clothing just as often.
Specialized Equipment
A single set of armor protects his torso, as he does not like the use of helmets very much. He uses a rapier with a selenite crystal embedded into the hilt when in battle, allowing him to channel spells easier. It helps quite a bit, considering his mediocre mana supply.
Mental characteristics
Employment
Was self-employed as a fortune telling mage until he messed up a session with a dangerous official. He now works as an adventurer with the rest of the Windwell Guild.
Accomplishments & Achievements
- He, along with the rest of his guild, were able to spar with Clover Bennett for longer than ten minutes without much issue. They still lost, but it was a good experience!
- Actually managed to make a humble living as a fake fortune teller.
Failures & Embarrassments
Screwing up his fortune telling session with a dangerous government worker forced him to flee from his business and join the the Windwell Guild.
He once tried to impersonate royalty for a few days to ensure good food and a nice place to rest for his friends. This did not go very well.
Morality & Philosophy
Gilford focuses on himself first and foremost, but he truly does care for his newfound friends, no matter how big of a dick he can be. He is willing to reach out to others and offer help, provided they can also help him in return.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Gilford wants to get rich and do whatever it takes to not go to jail. Thus, he journeys with the Windwell Guild, hoping that he can get both of those goals done somehow.
Likes & Dislikes
Likes: Gemstones, tricks, noodles, walking in forests, spell crafting, charm crafting, fortune telling, himself
Dislikes: Cheaply made lunches, a ruined hairstyle, beans, failed scams, his own mana capacity
Virtues & Personality perks
Despite coming off as some cocky mage, he is actually quite caring for others and is rather patient. His fortune telling business, as much of a scam it was, actually had him try to push people to certain paths he thought would encourage them to do something for themselves.
Vices & Personality flaws
Is very cocky and haughty, and as such can come off as a bit of a vain prick. Nobody really puts up with it though.
He also has a tendency to create a scheme that would supposedly benefit him and his friends, but if he doesn't think things through, he'll panic and start to double down on something without thinking of the consequences.
Social
Social Aptitude
Cocky, haughty, and has a bit of an ego that gets punched down on a daily basis by his friends.
Relationships
Relationship Reasoning
Kaiyo is often annoyed by how much of an idiot Gilford can be, but at the end of the day, they can both consider each other to be trusted allies. Friends? Well, that's a bit of a gray area, but it's there!
Relationship Reasoning
Natalie and Gilford get along decently, but will sometimes get annoyed with his antics. Despite this, they can talk to each other openly about anything and often brew potions together.
Relationship Reasoning
Gilford thinks Leon could lighten up a little, but considering his track record on schemes, Leon has every right to stay skeptical. They are still friends despite it all, however.
