Goat chariots

Goat chariots are a vehicle that used to be used by the militaries of Farensal in the Early Kingdom period, but are now primarily used for the sport of goat racing.

Mechanics

The chariots used in modern goat racing are typically light two-wheeled carts, pulled by four goats. The racer steers the chariot with the help of the reins and a whip.

Breeds

The goats used in the races are usually pure breeds of a few dedicated racing-goat breeds. They are taller and stronger than typical goats, and have fearless temper.

Spotted lightning

The Spotted Lightning, Nem narhau bilunde is one of the most popular racing goat breeds. They are large, have small horns for easier handleability, and their white and black or brown coat gives them a majestethic appearance. They were introduced in the competition by the Purple team, and are said to originate near their headquarters, Arensande.

History

Goat racing was invented in the early 2nd century AFS. Goat racing probably evolved from two distinct traditions, goats used for pulling small carts to transport items, and racing goats for speed without a rider. In the earlier periods goats had been raised primary food hair, meat and milk. In the First Kindom Period the growing city elite turned the focus of the goat breeding into more recreational uses, giving arise to larger breeds. Thus goats had become large and strong enough to race while pulling a chariot with a rider.

The Memorial Stele of 200 AFS mentions a "goat running event" organised to commemorate the anniversary of the city, but the details of the competition are unknown, and thus it's impossible to know whether it refers to the earlier tradition of unmanned goat competions, or chariot racing.

During the First Intermission Period (290-418 AFS) war chariots pulled by goats were commonly represented in art. These fast moving vehicles were the peak elite status symbol of the time, representing the braveness of the warrior driving in battle.

In later eras the focus of war campains shifted from the Farensal plains to the surrounding mountaineous regions, leading to the war chariots falling out of use as they were impractical and dangerous in the more uneven terrain. However, goat racing remains a hugely popular and culturally important sport.
