Goat Racing

Goat racing is a popular sport where goats, typically a group of four, compete in pulling a chariot ridden by a racer over a set distance. Goat racing also involves a massive industry around organising competitions, fan culture and betting.

Races

Regular races are organised in the Grand Stadium every five days, on the Firstday, and larger games on religious or state holidays. The largest races are held on the Anniversary of the City (1st of Firstmonth) and the Birthday of Naralte (10th of Thirdmonth). These grand races are accompanied by various other attractions, such as swordsfighting, music and comedy.

Teams

There are four main racing teams competing in Silford, The Yellow, Blues, Greens and Purples.

Breeds

The goats used in the races are usually pure breeds of a few dedicated racing-goat breeds. They are taller and stronger than typical goats, and have fearless temper.

Spotted lightning

The Spotted Lightning, Nem narhau bilunde is one of the most popular racing goat breeds. They are large, have small horns for easier handleability, and their white and black or brown coat gives them a majestethic appearance. They were introduced in the competition by the Purple team, and are said to originate near their headquarters, Arensande.

Public opinion

Goat racing is a hugely popular sport, the largest stadiums such as the Grand Goat Racing Stadium of Silford able to accomodate 100 000 spectators (around one third of the citizen population of the city). A diverse Fan Culture has also developed around the sport.

However, it has also been criticised for being morally dubious and vulgar past time. Especially the betting industry has been accused of corruption and attempting to bankrupt citizens. The fan culture, including the near-worship of the racers (often coming from lower class backgrounds) has also been deemed blasphemous. Despite that, much of the high classes continue to be just as devoted fans of the sport as the common people.

Thanks, I had no idea I'd enjoy writing about it so much either, until the idea just spawned from somewhere :D
