White Picket

When approaching White Picket it doesn’t appear to be anything besides a slum. This block of shacks and small houses create what appears as a solid wall. Subtle signs direct those who know to look for them to the proper entrance for the day. A set of stalls appear as ordinary shacks, but only one will open up to the market.   Inside the main body of the market is a grid of towering mushroom stalk spires. Between each of these spires curtains are drawn and removed with surprising frequency. The paths available to walk shifting as fences bring people into private conversations, shielding themselves from interlopers and offering secrecy to their trades. Even if a particular fence is in the market that day, finding them can be difficult as they are a moving target through the shifting maze of tapestries and curtains.   To the untrained eye it might look like strangers milling about putting up and taking down tapestries to reform and redirect this living maze. Yet, this is where deals are made and goods exchanged. The nefarious, rare, and desirable. All on offer if the buyer and seller can find one another.   It is said that it is not the will of a fence or a buyer where an object goes, but a call from the object itself. Treasures know where they’d be most wanted and tend to draw in just the right person. As quickly and easily as a fence can find a buyer, they are separated by curtain and cloth as though they had never met.   Members of the Town Guard and Amberlight Security are barred from entry if their identity is known.

Purpose / Function

White Picket is home to a seedy underbelly of criminal activity and black market trade that exists outside the interested reach of enforceable law. Too easy for those involved to disperse to safety, and too risky to be worth the time. Here people may trade all manner of things if only the right fence is found. Some deal in goods rare enough to fetch a high end bidder. Others contract themselves out for services that wouldn’t do to advertise in polite company.

Hazards & Traps

This is not a safe place. When so much trade takes place without the morality of the state overseeing it, it becomes quite easy for people here who ignore the small rules to just look the other way at the big rules too. Deaths at White Picket, provided they have paid up appropriately for the pleasure, often go unreported and uninvestigated.   Anyone who is known to be a goody good sort, any sort of extension of the law, or any kind of holier than thou organization must roll a deception check with a DC equal to their Clout score to keep from being roughed up when in this market.
