Dywdian Calendar
The calendar was created by the first king of Dywd. It proports to be an refinement of earlier calendars and an implementation of the existing divine order of Sanzeia. It divides the year into 12 months, one dedicated to each of the major gods. Each month is made up of 5 weeks, consisting of 6 days each.
The names of the 12 months are drawn from high elven interpretations of the pre-collapse Giant language.
- Ia'via, the Month of Order, is the first month, dedicated to Ulmark, the Worldshaper. Of particular note, under this calendar the first day of the first month of each year is marked by both of Sanzeia's moons shining brightly.
- Syeri, the Month of Secrets, is the time of secrets where all of the land is covered in snow. It is overseen by the the Shunned Goddess.
- Chesi, the month of the craftsmen, is particularly sacred to dwarves and is overseen by their patron god, Hedir. The Spring Equinox falls on the 19th of this month.
- Yikaed, the Month of Beginnings, gets its name from a Giant word denoting birth. This month is seen to be the province of Eo, the goddess of motherhood, nature, and flowers. Children born in this month as said to be blessed.
- Rasi, the Month of Stars, is derived from the word for sight and honors the star-eyed Goblin goddess, Luciel.
- Yienaf, the Month of Beauty, is a favorite of the sun elves of Himse. The Solstice, the longest day of the year is on the 19th and is celebrated by honoring the sun god, Calowean. Himse the Prophet of the elves is said to have been born on the first day of this month, and his birth is widely celebrated in the lands of the Sun Elves.
- Vaevi, the Month of Strength, comes from a word indicating personal courage and honors the war god Throndar.
- Silar, the Month of Storms, is the time of storms presided over by the tempestuous dwarven goddess, Maredeth.
- Pheali, the Month of Magic, is the month honoring mages and The Watcher, Unnamed. Its name supposedly comes from the word for fate. The Autumnal Equinox is on the 19th of this month.
- Adva, the Month of Endings, comes from the giant word for endings or death. It is devoted to Raz'ka the all consuming serpent god of the Yuan-ti. This month marks the end of the harvest season and sits opposite the month of the life goddess.
- Kigariv, the Month of Gold, is named in honor of the Yuan-ti goddess of kings Shivad'ress.
- Daekyl is the month of darkness presided over by the goddess of night, Lyndranel. It marks the end of the year and darkest nights. The Solstice is on the 19th of this month.
- Ord is the day of giants. It is suggested it shares the same root as the Ordning.
- Frae is the elves' day and is said to call back to the Fae home of the elves before Sanzeia.
- Grat supposedly comes from a ancient orcish word for thunder.
- Krun is derived from a proto-dwarven word meaning fortress.
- Tis is named in honor of the Yuan-ti and supposedly shares the sibilant nature of their tongue.
- Xa is strangely enough said to have replaced an earlier word in the language of the Banished Ones even though the Dywdian Calendar was created ages after the event that would have made the word taboo.
Social Impact
Used and widely accepted throughout Sanzeia, the Dwydian calendar have several notable, if slightly confusing features:
- Chief it is inherently anachronistic. While not actively having any references to the The Betrayer or the Banished Ones, the calendar has references to where those references could have been removed, despite the calendar being created potentially hundreds of thousands of years after the removed events.
- The implication of the calendar is that once there were 13 months, or that Ulmark preceded over all months at once. This would have put the Betrayer's month as the first or second month of the year.
- It places gods opposite their divine rivals in regards to month order. On a pair by pair basis, this works much more clearly for certain months than others. The only notable exception being Ulmark and Throndar, thus prompting the theoretical placement of the Betrayer's month.
- The calendar alternates months with Sanzeia's twine moons either both being bright in the sky or completely dark on the first day of the new month
