Captain Yoral Fligher

Comodore Yoral Fligher (a.k.a. Captain Yor)

Yoral Fligher is the third son of 5 kids in a family of small traders. Born on one of the biggest islands in the Northern archipelago. At the age of 10, when sailing on one of the family's ships, the ship was attacked by pirates and boarded. Some sailors were killed, but most were taken as slaves. Yoral, as an educated boy, was not sold but left to live with pirates. As time passed, he started to like a pirate's life. After the death of the old captain, Yoral took his place in charge of the ship. Yoral was born in the family of Morelay and Eanisha Fligher, small traders. He is the third child of 5 kids - two older brothers, one younger sister and one brother. From very early childhood, he was attracted by the open sea and the art of sailing. He could stare for hours to watch the endless sea and the foamy waves. The first time he got on the boat, he felt it was the right place. Soon, he showed great sailing and navigation skills even for islanders, but at the same time, his Math and negotiation skills were horrific. In contrast, all his brothers were excellent mathematicians and negotiators - the most important skills for every trader and merchant. Only his sister - Stisia - shares his love to see, but she still was a better trader than he. When Yoral was seven years old, his oldest brother - Ularil, older by 12 years - entered into a big conflict with their father about how to treat their workers. Morelay believes workers must be respected, and their employers must take responsibility for their safety. On the other side, Ularil has seen them just as a tool for achieving goals. Soon, the conflict escalated, and calm and quiet Morelay got out of his skin. He banished and disinherited his firstborn son. But he was deeply hurt and left a wound in his heart. When Yoral were nine, his father fell sick and soon died. Morelay's second son - Nhucher - became head of the family business. Ularil didn't ever honour his father's funeral. He sends his condolences and offers to buy the family business at an "excellent market price", as he wrote. Nhucher burns the letter and spits on its ashes. He runs the business with a firmer hand than their father but still respects all his workers and treats them as a person, not like objects. All this shakes young Yoral hard. His 5-year-old sister takes it much easier, and their youngest brother was too young - only half a year old - to understand what happened. Yoral sees himself forced to grow up and help his family to overcome difficulties. His attempt to become a trader almost led to conflict and break with some of his long-standing family partners. He leaves this career just before his lack of skills causes catastrophe. But all this almost breaks him. Yoral falls into deep doubt about all his abilities. Now, he often can be seen sitting on any big rock at Foreland near the entrance of the port bay and watching the endless ocean. One cold, stormy evening, Yoral stays and watches how big waves crash over breakwater when the chance to prove himself shows itself. A crippled ship appears from the darkness on course to crash over rocks. Insignia over ship hull, sails and standing were unknown for Yoral, but he recognised deep-sea heavy ships. The ship's crew also noticed where the course led and tried to anchor the vessel. The ship starts slowing its speed, and for a moment, it looks like she will stop, but wind and tides drag her and rip the anchor chain. Yoral quickly estimates that in this weather, a damaged vessel with that construction and without a local pilot has no chance to survive and will crash over the breakwater and what impact doesn't destroy, the storm will do it - both the crew, the ship and the cargo. At this moment, Yiral realises that he is the ship's last chance to reach the port in one piece. Young Flighel recklessly throws himself into foaming waters and swims to the ship. This was a hazardous action, but he had swum into a storm many times in the past, so he was sure of this part. From close range, he could read the name written on the sides - "Vodohodeshtata" and many fighting embrasures but not a climbing net. Boarding the ship becomes the first challenge. Lucky for him, the anchor was slow enough to ship, and its chain gave him the option to climb. Once on board, he had welcomed with unsheathed rapiers from scared-soaking sailors in military uniforms. His voice was fading like a roar of thunder and howling winds, so he had to explain why it came with gestures and mimics. After that, he quickly brought to the captain - old Gnoll with fresh wounds on his face - in a small cabinet where they could hear each other.
"My name is Yoral Flighel," - Introduce himself, Yoral. - "I came to help."
"And how can a whelp to help one of the mightiest battleships of Matresia?" - Ask the captain icily.
"Can help to avoid crash over the breakwater or to stuck into shallows."
"Really?" - still icily replies the captain. - "
