CYF Hedgy
The "Hedgy" is the first ship of Hedgy-class galleons.
The ship was armed with two heavy ballistae mounted on carriages in the bow, several Scorpios alongside boards and a heavy artillery mage-technical cannon, mounted on the elevated rotating carriage on the stern. Both ballistae were the newest development at the time when the ship was built, as they were able to launch various types of ballista projectiles such as standard bolts, fin-stabilized bolts, bed-launched, dual- and fork-tail projects and so on. Scorpios, however, were just normal mass-produced bolt-throwers that can shoot standard types of bolts or grapnels. Stern's cannon was from an older generation but proven to be reliable, easy to maintain and use. However, as a continental build, the cannon is not optimized for naval combat as it's heavy and large.
Metal plates on the bow and artillery unit on the stern were distributing weight very unevenly on the ship and this could lead to potential hogging of the hull and keel. Luckily, this was noticed very early, as the ship was still on design tables, and the measures were taken. The keel was fortified with additional metal beams to keep it straight and some changes to the internal configuration were made to redistribute weight. The capacities of armoured ammunition storages of the cannon at the stern and the ballistae at the bow were greatly reduced and therefore - their dimensions. The exceeding amounts were transferred to the newly introduced armoured vault in the central area of the ship. This helped rebalance weight distribution and reduced torsion of the keel. Unfortunately, this increased the total mass of the ship and further reduced her already average speed. In an attempt to keep the speed at least average to other ships in the fleet, rearranging of the masts was made and a new sail plan was introduced. Captain Yoral further enhanced speed by spending a small fortune on top-quality sails with embroidered magical traces and figures. He also hired a squad of wind-blowing mages to keep those sails set all the time and provide thrust if needed. All modifications made the already costly project even more expensive, so the Captain had to reduce the number of the purchased vessels from 15 to only 9.
All the ships of this class proved to be insanely reliable and functional. In fact, many times only the presence of any of them was enough to prevent attacks on the convoy. However, such effectiveness has price and maintenance of the ships were far above the average cost of all other warships in the fleet.
As the fleet of Captain Yoral Fligher grows, he felt the need to protect it better. So he bought or ordered several ships, besides the captured ones, to strengthen it. One of the ordered ship types was a heavily armoured and armed galleon, constructed under his explicit supervision. She was designed and built by one of The Archipelago 's most advanced shipyard, The Archipelago Maritime Shipyards). The ship's hull was built from high-quality Silver Drenik Tree and reinforced with magic-infused metal plates. The keel was strongly fortified and finished with heavy ram at the waterline. An additional beam forms the upper bow creating the impression of a maw. The entire bow area was covered with metal cast and additional plates were covering other key locations of the hull. This, however, adds much weight to the ship, especially in frontal areas.
