Uman (oo-MAHN)
The planet Uman is much less conducive to business than its spacer population. Orbital traffic is heavily controlled, unauthorized vessels attempting to enter the atmosphere inevitably becoming the target of dozens of advanced anti-ship defenses scattered around the planet. The only way on or off the planet is via one of the many space elevators maintained by Uman’s nations.
On the surface, Uman’s six highly militarized nations are locked in a cold war, one whose source has been lost to the scream. Advanced planetary weapons systems lost over the silence were rediscovered as the planet recovered, all of which were primed and aimed at one another, capable of wiping out the pre-scream population centers surrounding them. These weapons have locked the neighbouring nations into a cold war of mutually assured destruction.
Debate over what to do with these weapons systems became incredibly divisive, and has kept a solution from being reached to this day. The reason why such an extensive network of firepower was developed, and why they were aimed at each other to begin with, is still unknown.
The weapons themselves are a kind of Singularity generator. They launch a payload mathematically related to a miniaturized black hole at their target. Once launched, these payloads will invariably cause massive damage - no conventional defenses are known that can resist the destructive forces of the weapon. These weapons, and their related facilities, have been dubbed Planetary Singularity Generators.
At present, each nation controls around a dozen space elevators that ferry people and resources from the ground to non-threat space. Generally, the only starships that are authorized to enter Umanian airspace are Trade Union freighters. The Umanian Trade Union has an exclusive contract of neutrality with all the nations of Uman, allowing the planet to maintain a tie to the greater Region.
While the Asmaran Federation was technically forged between the planet of Uman and the other core worlds, all Federation senators from Uman since its founding have also been members of the Umanian Trade Union directors board at some point or another. It is commonly understood that the governments of Uman exercise little power on the solar stage.
The planet itself is heavily forested outside the population centers, a series of mini-continents arranged into archipelagos in the equatorial band. The seasons flip between a rainy season and a snowy season, the population well adapted to precipitation and strong winds.
