Supernatural (ˌsuː.pɚˈnæʧ.ɹəl)

Aside from magical creatures, they are the only ones who can wield magic. Though, there are rare cases of humans with supernatural ancestry being born with small magical gifts – e.g. the ability to see through glamour – which, otherwise, can only be bestowed by a supernatural.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Generally humanoid, though some possess animal-like/plantlike body parts (e.g. tails, fangs/tusks, bark-like skin, etc.) and/or the ability to shapeshift into animals/plants/etc. Pointed ears of different sizes and shapes are the most common telltale feature amongst those who otherwise look perfectly human.

Biological Traits

Differences in size, etc. generally loosely correlate with the type of magic one wields, e.g. those with magic useful for home maintenance/guardianship/etc. – like gnomes, brownies, zashiki warashi, etc. – are generally very small in stature.

Genetics and Reproduction

Pregnancies generally take longer than they do for humans – sometimes up to twice as long, resulting in a pregnancy around eighteen months instead of nine – and menstrual cycles are usually bimonthly (as in “every two months,” not “twice a month”) instead of monthly.

Growth Rate & Stages

Supernaturals generally age slower than humans do, sometimes as much as half the speed (they are not, however, immortal in any sense of the word, contrary to popular human beliefs).

Dietary Needs and Habits

Different depending on the type of supernatural and whether or not they suffer from vampirism.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Worldwide, though population density and dimensional plane varies.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

A common practice across many ethnicities is for children to be named after either the magitype they show the earliest signs of or a magitype that is known to run in the family. The family has a lot of members with strong organic magic? They'll probably have a lot of members named after animals, plants, medicines, poisons/venoms, etc. Earth magic? They'll probably have a lot of members named after things like crystals, metals, mechanical bits, etc.

Major Organizations

Those who choose to live among humans will generally have their own secret government separate from the local human one, specifically for handling affairs concerning magic (e.g. the Amitian Supernatural Council in Amity City, which is a separate entity from the local humans' Amitian City-State).   In large enough "other worlds" (e.g. The Heavens), it's not uncommon for them to form their own countries, as well (e.g. The Heavenly Empire).

Beauty Ideals

It's generally considered more beautiful for one's nonhuman traits to be as pronounced as possible. The fluffiest tails, the longest fangs/tusks, etc.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They tend to fall into one of two camps in their opinions on humans:
  1. It's their duty to use their powers to protect and take care of them from the shadows.
  2. They're rotten, contemptible creatures who deserve to have their lives meddled in.
Scientific Name
Homo sapiens supernaturalis
Lifespan
Avg. of 145yrs; can live up to 240yrs
Conservation Status
Their numbers have never been very large between the supernatural genes generally being recessive and humans having a history of killing them out of fear.   To preserve their numbers, they try to keep their existences a secret or disguise themselves and live as ordinary humans/plants/animals/etc. It's also considered preferable for them to marry either other supernaturals or humans with known supernatural ancestry.
