Firefighter

Requirements

Upon swearing in as a Firefighter, they must:
  • be a citizen;
  • have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • have a driver's license;
  • be at least 21 and not older than 35 on swear-in date
Upon successfully passing their probationary period, recruits are elevated to the position of Firefighter.

Appointment

Firefighters are sworn in the day they have completed all requirements as a recruit. New Firefighters are recognized by the Mayor at the Annual Firefighter's Ball.

Duties

Firefighters are responsible for the general hands-on actions of fire suppression.

Responsibilities

Be prepared to respond to an emergency call within acceptable time frames. Maintain fire equipment to ensure operational readiness. Suppress and extinguish fires.

Pay and benefits per the N.E.F.D. pay and benefits schedule.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A Fire Captain can recommend suspension or dismissal for any Firefighter. Final adjudication rests with the Fire Chief.
