Janine Waaban Quinn
Janine Quinn
-
Janine Waaban Quinn is the daughter of Honehe Wolf Deerchild & Mary Mookham, and the great-granddaughter of Maeno. Honehe and Mary took Janine and her sister Anne Ogichidaa Deerchild to camp out on the land every summer after school let out, in the manner of their ancestors. Honehe tried to teach them all the stories he knew, as did Mary.
-
They both tried to raise the girls with traditional First Nations values. While Anne looked forward to their time in the bush, Janine came to hate it, eventually refusing to go in a teenage temper tantrum. The family never returned to the land again. Janine scorned her heritage, ignoring her middle name (which means "dawn"), and swore that any children she might have in the future would not be brought up as she and Anne had.
-
When Janine met Randall Quinn, she saw a way out of her past. The only concession she made to her heritage was in the name she gave their daughter. But Janine was frequently distant toward Anais as she grew up. As a result, they were not close. As Anais grew older, they grew even further apart.
-
Randall developed Alzheimer's about the same time that Anais was getting ready to go away to Police College, Janine put him in a care home, sold off their house and most of their belongings, then moved into a “bachelor” apartment. Anais never forgave her for it.
