Kinari

Written by Drackzahn

Oh, I won't kill you. I am just absorbing your very essence, your soul into my own. You will become a part of my inner world, if you like it or not.

Kinari are Kitsune-Like beings and most likely the origin of most ancient kitsune myths on Earth. They are soul devourers and highly skilled magicians. While their number is low compared to many other species, a single Kinari can be a potent foe for most. Most Kinari enjoy being seen as goddesses in the Cult of Kina. All known Kinari are female.

Abilities

Magic Potency
Each Kinari is a potent magic spellcaster and has access to a vast soul energy pool. Especially older Kinari and those that have absorbed many souls during their life seemed to have endless mana. While they may be not as precise with their magic as sylvan elves, not as fast as eden elves, and not as vastly powerful with a single spell as a genie, their near-endless supply of soul energy allows them to cast nearly non-stop and without break. The exact use of magic depends on the clan. Each clan has specialized in a different kind of magic.
Soul Absorption
The core aspect ability of the Kinari species is their dangerous ability to absorb the souls of their prey. Kinari can absorb souls in two ways. First are the souls of the recent dead. Souls stay in the body of the dead for a while, normally a day or two, before they depart from our world back towards their core-soul to be reborn. That time can be used by a Kinari. She can absorb such lingering souls and transport them into her Inner World, denying them rebirth. The second, far more dangerous, aspect of this ability is that they can suck out the souls of living beings. While it is far easier for them if the prey is giving them their soul willingly, like many members of the Cult of Kina, they can try to steal the souls of resisting prey as well. If they are successful, the body remains to be absorbed into the Kinari or to be left alone to rot.
Inner World
Each Kinari has an Inner World. This mental world is a place where the souls of absorbed prey live. The exact way of this world, how it looks, feels, tastes, and what emotions it is offering to its inhabitants, differs heavily from Kinari to Kinari. Some have worlds that differ very little from our real world, giving the souls the illusion that they live on their lives and nothing happened to them. Others have Inner Worlds that can only be described as their versions of heaven or hell. Souls that live inside such Inner Worlds often know where they are. Each is amplifying the magic potency of the Kinari. A Kinari can wander inside her inner world as well, either hiding herself or showing herself openly towards her trapped souls. Most Kinari are merciful and friendly towards their prey, but that is not always the case. Kinari can allow guests to visit their Inner World by cuddling them with their tails and letting them sink into a deep sleep, linking their souls to their inner World. This allows people to visit trapped souls, often the souls of passed family members or old friends. Especially in the Cult of Kina, this ability is often used.
Inary Transformation
Out of a trapped soul, or a willing prey in the real world, a Kinari can transform an Inary. These Inaries are linked to the Kinari and are often helping them as her maids or protectors. Most Kinari that hold a higher position in society surrounds themselves with at least some Inaries.
Inary Absorption
The tails of many Kinari are in reality Inary. A Kinari can absorb an Inary into her tail, increasing her power and letting her gain access to all memories, all experiences, and all magic abilities of the absorbed Inaries.
Kinari Rebirth
In rare cases, a Kinari will rebirth a prey or an Inary into a Kinari. This process is so rare that there exists no documentation of the process itself. What is known from legends is that the reborn Kinari will be of the same clan as their mother and often stay with their mother for many years.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kinari are kitsune-like beings with a typical humanoid body extended by long fox ears, and up to 9 fluffy tails. The amount of tails can vary, depending on their usage of their magic abilities and their age. The exact look and characteristics of Kinaries are highly versatile, resulting in many different clans existing. A special trait that all Kinari share is the "magic-heart" organ. With it, they can harvest the soul energy of others efficiently and use it for their magic abilities. Souls absorbed into their bodies are believed to live on inside the magic heart.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kinari are quiet about the way of birth and reproduction. Most who have asked them directly were devoured by them after finding out about it.
— Sword Singer Adventurer Gustav Hellos of New Atlantis
Births are extremely rare for Kinari. While a Kinari can become pregnant like most mammals, they rarely find a potent enough partner to do so. To impregnate a Kinari, a partner must give their very body and essence to the Kinari which is absorbed into the Kinari. The process itself is a well-kept secret for most Kinaries. First, the Kinari will link the soul of their partner to her own by strong intimacy. The partner must be willing and open for the Kinari for the ritual to be successful. A resisting partner can never result in a successful pregnancy. After the linking is complete, the Kinari devours her partner in any way she wants to, either by simply absorbing them into her body, by using her fluffy tails, or by other means like traditional oral vore, anal vore, or unbirthing. The partner is reduced to an essence core that wanders into the womb of the Kinari, resulting in a pregnancy. After one month, the core will split into two identical twins, one will be a fully new individual with a new soul, while the other one will be the reborn partner with all memories and their soul remaining intact. Memories of such reborn partners are often veiled after the rebirth and most simply forget about their old life. A Kinari pregnancy takes 14 months on average and results in twins, in sporadic cases in triples.   The second, more common way of reproduction for the Kinari is the transformation of an Inari into a Kinari.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Kinari are omnivores that eat meat, but most often only fruits and vegetables. Depending on their social rank, they may have different preferences in their food. While such general food keeps them alive and satisfied, they also can absorb the souls of others to refill their magic if required.

Behaviour

Remember: If you ever meet a Kinari, look at the color of their fur. If it is golden or orange, feel free to approach her. But if it is white, black, or red, then run as fast as you can and pray that she has not noticed you.
— Village elder to the younger ones
Kinari are very individualistic beings who are very aware of their power potential and many see themselves as natural rulers. The exact characteristics of their behavior differ from Clan to Clan and can be vastly different. Some clans live in total harmony with others and are known as kind, caring rulers who will treat the ill and help the weak. Other clans however are known as merciless hunters, who enjoy hunting and consuming the souls of their prey as a sport.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Kinari see themselves as natural rulers and often try to reach high positions in their societies. The species is split into many clans, which form their ethnicities. Each clan can be traced back to the Age of Goddesses and the ancient goddess Goldie Kitsune. All ancestors of the clans are directly linked, often personally transformed by the goddess. The clans differ not only in their look or their choice of magic but also in the way they interact with each other and society as a whole. While some clans demand their members to be cooperative with each other and their servants, others follow the rule of strength, where only the strongest Kinari is allowed to make decisions for all.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The biggest concentration of Kinari is in the Confederation of Kinary, where they form the ruling class. Kinari are however spread over many areas of Bardor and even have appeared recently on Earth again.

History

Age of Goddesses
The first Kinari were transformed and reborn during the Age of Goddesses by Goldie Kitsune. During this time, the Kinari were merciful, soft, gentle, and playful like their goddess and served her well. They protected her temples, and her followers, collected information, and were often called the children of Goldie. Each Clan can trace back their origin back to this time.
War of the Goddesses
With the war of their goddess against the darkness that Lia brought to the world, many Kinari changed. It was a time of striving, of battles, and where mercy was a weakness. Many Kinari perished during this time and those that survived often changed, becoming harder and more brutal. They still served their goddess and were soon known as her generals and her strongest elite fighters. Single Kinari were able to consume thousands of souls during the war, becoming semi-god-like in the process and becoming able to cast magic powerful enough to shake the foundation of whole cities.
Lost goddess
At 500 BC, with the fall of Atlantis, their goddess vanished. Without her guidance, the Kinari split into many different groups that were soon known as the clans of the Kinari. While some clans began hiding far away from civilization, deep in magical forests or swamps, others continued their war against the Theocracy of Atlantis and their successor nations.
Confederacy
In 1301, several clans of the Kinari joined together and founded the Confederation of Kinary after conquering the land from a successor nation of Atlantis.
