Atlanesis

Written by Drackzahn

"Once we were at the heart of the Atlantis empire! But now? Look around you! Mutations. Fanatics. Monsters. Desolation. Little remains of the once great empire and its technology. We are living on a continent that is divided. Lia has forsaken us." An old man from the Free Cities of Lia
Atlanesis is a divided continent, trapped in a time after a high culture. The civilizations and nations of this landmass are on a medieval level but with access to ancient artifacts of the old Theocracy of Atlantis. Most inhabitants are Human, but there exists also nations of various monsters, Anthros, Taurs, Golems ,and Demihumans. The continent has many old ruins that give access to old Magitech artifacts of old Atlantis. There were many new, small nations that formed after Atlantis fell, most of them trading with each other, but also often in conflict with their neighbors. Due to the high pink mist concentration, the modern technologies of Earth do not work here. Several international guilds are operating between the nations and securing trade routes, forming expeditions into the old ruins to gain access to old artifacts or simply earn money by trading. These guilds are often as strong as small nations and conflict with them can easily lead to the doom of a nation.

Geography

The continent was once bigger than it is today. After the great Pink Mist Storm that ended in 500 before Christ, the continent was split into 5 landmasses. Today we call the biggest of these landmasses the Atlanesis continent. It is a vast place with several mountain ranges that split the continent into areas. In the far north, there exists a dry peninsular, followed south by a temperated forest and grassland region. After the main mountain range that spans the continent from east to west, there is the former core of the old continent. It is a Mediterranean climate with many dry areas and plains. This area was heavily devastated by the storm 2500 years ago. Far in the east, you can find a massive desert, the same as far in the south of the continent. From the far west to the east, the distance is 1480 km, and from the north to south, it is 1400 km.

Localized Phenomena

The areas around the old city ruins of the former Theocracy of Atlantis are producing their weather patterns and strange phenomena. The most dangerous one of these is the Teras Limni, the bay around the former Atlantis. The sea is extremely dangerous for ships, as storms can appear and vanish nearly instantly, the same as heavy fog. In rare cases, even fogs of Pink Mist can roam small areas, transforming them into nogo areas over the water. It becomes only worse on the small island in the center. The ruins of the old Atlantis are filled with Magitech that are partly still active to this day. Heavy storms roam the ruins often, making each expedition into the old city dangerous.

Climate

Due to the high pink mist concentration that devastated the continent, the weather was disrupted and changed heavily over the whole area. The new mountain ranges disturbed the rain clouds and let them take different paths over the landmass. In the north, there exists the area with the heaviest rainfall, while the far east and south get nearly no rainfall at all and are deserts. The temperates span from temperated climates in the woodland areas of the north over Mediterranean ones at the center of the continent to dry desert temperatures at the east and south.

Fauna & Flora

After the second great Pink Mist Storm, the flora and fauna of Atlanesis became far more dangerous than before. Formerly peaceful animals transformed into monsters and deadly plants made to hunt innocent prey that came across them. Even today, over 2000 years later, the animals and plants of the continent are bigger and fiercer than on most other continents of Bardor. Civilization can only exist in secured areas, often protected by either walls or natural barriers from the vast dangerous plains around them. Over the whole continent, there exists areas that are not claimed by any nation, simply because they are not able to hold it. Often these areas are inhabited by simple tribes, small groups of skilled survivalists, and dangerous monsters that roam these wilderness.

History

Atlanesis was once the cradle of the Theocracy of Atlantis with Atlantis at the western center of the realm. The whole continent was under the control of Humans who followed their goddess Lia. They arrived around 19500 before Christ on Bardor by discovering portals of the first Pink Mist Storm. Over the coming millenniums, they reshaped the continent and developed their first civilization here.   Their golden age started at the end of the War of the Gods. They had won against the forces of Sylvia and the continent was the core of an empire. This all ended with the end of the second Pink Mist Storm and the destruction of Atlantis. The continent's shape was reforged, mountains crumbled and new ranges formed in hours and days. Most big cities were destroyed and a big portion of the population died or fled through the closing portals to Earth. After the destruction came the warlords and new nations formed from the ruins. Even today you can find many lost artifacts of old Atlantis on this continent.
