Ground-to-Orbit Missile Portable Launcher
The Ground-to-Orbit Missile Portable Launcher, or GOMP Launcher, is a portable missile launchers that can be utilized by individual, or teams of individuals targeting orbital or sub-orbital starships, satellites, and aerospace vehicles. GOMP launchers have long been a thorn in the side of any kind of planetary invasion force. GOMP Launchers are cheap to produce, and easy to train users for.
Before the GOMP, military strategists would argue that orbital superiority was a "winner takes all" game. Whoever could claim the orbit, could freely bombard the planet, ferry troops to the surface, and deploy intelligence hardware above the surface. However, following the invention of the GOMP Launcher, the game was forever changed. Strides made in the cultivation of Isotope-10 allowed for a condensed and powerful fuel source that could make a shoulder fired-missile launcher possible. Most GOMPs are two stage missiles, that hurl Iso-warheads towards orbit. Most require a seperate laser guided spotter, but one spotter can help guide multiple GOMP Launchers. They are best utilized in mass, where starship point-defense weapons are overwhelmed by the amount of missiles launched.
In practice, this has totally altered the state of the modern battlefield. While not able to go toe-to-toe, GOMP launchers allow citizen militias and planetary defense forces to make planetary invasions a nightmarish activity for even the strongest naval invasion forces. Suppressing these weapons is impossible without actual boots on the ground, and because of their relative ease to build, maintain, and operate, they are everywhere.
Organizations such as the Pacifica Liberation Front make regular use of GOMP Launchers against the Colonial Earth Empire. The Occupation of Thraka in particular has highlighted the problem that conventional forces deal with when trying to occupy a heavily urbanized planet. The PLF regularly makes use of "Hunter Killer Teams", that scatter amongst the highrises and skyscapers that dot Thraka's surface. The "Hunters" will usually secure a position high up, and laser trace the target in question. Meanwhile, the "Killer" teams will deploy scattered through ground-level streets, or on skyscraper balconies. "Killer" teams will then fire en masse on whatever the target in question is, and then scatter amongst the population.
