Reneslar

Lord Marshal Reneslar (a.k.a. Nefariel)

Lord Marshal Reneslar is the leader of the Greenwood Conclave, and bearer of the Great Sword Elnar. He is the son of the previous Lord Marshal Taracnar, who was the bearer of Elnar before him. Reneslar traces his family lineage back to Lord Narvaina, who helped to lead the Aisheloni in their exile to Wessa.   During the Frost War, Reneslar was a member of the questing party that journeyed north to defeat the Jötun King Thrymm. The Frost War ended in 3229. After some time spent in the north, Reneslar and the rest of the Questing Party returned home in 3231 by way of Doltrek, where Reneslar first met Princess Adelia, daughter of the king. When Reneslar returned to the Greenwood he was elected the new Lord Marshal (to replace Taracnar, who was assumed to be killed in action).   Because of Reneslar's friendship with Keeper Grenton (now made assistant to High Keeper Trolan) and because of the budding relationship between the Reneslar and Adelia, a new era of cooperation between the Lansian realms started to grow again under Trolan's leadership. The isolationist policies of Alerec lost sway among the Keepers, and his party lost power in Onscra. Belief in the prophecy of the Ilmarite Return to Aishelon began to resurface.   Construction of the Marshal tower began in early 3232, centering stewardship over the greater Greenwood (Fal-Prasinas) region with the Marshals. Vitrem, who had been Grenton and Reneslar's sylvan companion in the Great Quest, took leadership in Bonetra. It seemed as though a new era was awakening. Reneslar was married to Princess Adelia of Doltrek in November of 3232. Shortly thereafter, the newlyweds returned to the Greenwood Tower as a married couple. Early in 3233, the Witch Evanchoris covertly infiltrated the Greenwood where she secretly met with the Chief of the Satyrs.   With the help of a satyr diversion, Evanchoris abducted the pregnant Adelia from the Marshal Tower in the summer of 3233. Her intent was to draw Reneslar into a trap, intending to kill the Lord Marshal at her tower in Galdea and thereby capture the sword Elnar. This attempt failed. The Witch had been suddenly called away south from Galdea to City of Heliathys, to deal with a slave uprising. Reneslar rescued Adelia from the tower of Al-Galdeath and returned to the Greenwood, where Adelia gave birth to their son Morakar in August of 3233. Later in 3233, Adelia went back to Doltrek with Morakar, as Reneslar was called to consult in the defense of Parchet Castle with the advance of the Witch's forces in the east. Taking advantage of Reneslar's absence in the west, at the Winter Soltice, the Witch attacked and killed the Royal Family in Doltrek. (The infant Prince Morakar survived – though this was not widely known at the time.)   Later, during the War of the Witch, Reneslar was part of the team that journeyed to the heart of the Thrau kingdom, where Reneslar slayed Lotinthlai, the Queen of the Thrau.

Personal history

The isolation the Greenwood affords severely limited young Reneslars contact with human and demi-humankind. This, along with direct contact with the elvenfolk of the area aided greatly in bringing out the chaotic side of his personality. Later, his marriage to Adelia and close association with Doltrek helped expose his love for law and order. Also credited to Doltrek is his leadership qualities and his ability to assume command in tense situations.   His hot temper is probably his major problem, more often than not causing him to react with a vile, blood-thirsty, hatred not accorded to most “good” beings. This rashness is also seen when he meets new people, for he is quick to judge them friend or foe.   He is a chivalrous man clinging to the ideals of truth, bravery, honor and loyalty, and liberating damsels and others deserving justice, but his favorite rite of chivalry is the ruthless, annihilation of evil monsters. In most situations he is a merciful man, though the height of battle is one of the exceptions, for he is distrustful of the deceitful way of surrendering cowards. He will never lie even to avert death and will gladly die rather than desert a friend or valiant man. He has very few close friends for they must also follow the stringent code of chivalry he so dearly regards.   He has an unusual love and respect of the sea for Marshal, perhaps linking it to his happier days of his sea kingdom princess and their son. Because of her untimely death, he avoids most women and users of magic especially illusionists because of the keen pain they represent and the rage that is the result.   In all appearances Reneslar is absolutely stoic, but this is only partly true. He finds immense pleasure in battle, for in battle he can forget the pain he feels at least for the moment. He also rejoices in his son Morakar who is his sole reason for living and his main source of pride, making it hard to conceal the fact that the boy still exists. He will attack any enemy of Doltrek that he has even a remote chance of defeating for he considers it a personal attack on his son. He bares the pain he feels in his heart in the quiet solitude of his mind, keeping to himself and speaking only when necessary. Even then he sounds hateful and resentful. This is his defense to keep those who seek to infringe upon his privacy and pit him away.
