Sea Elves
Over three centuries before the founding of Ãkthi, already in the Mare Orientalem a rare sub-species of elf had emerged - the aquatic elf. Their primary civilization has always been the Chû civilization in the aforementioned sea, but migrants are known to have settled various oceans and seas throughout Alzhonar.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Elves are bipedal vertebrate humanoids in general anatomy. Elves possess the usual major systems:
- Circulatory System (adapted for very cold environments)
- Digestive & Execratory System
- Endocrine System
- Integumentary System
- Immune & Lymphatic System
- Muscular System
- Nervous System
- Renal & Urinary System
- Reproductive System
- Respiratory System (adapted with both lungs and gills, which can be used interchangeably)
- Skeletal System
Genetics and Reproduction
Elves reproduce sexually, generally producing one child per pregnancy, though twinning can rarely occur (1 in 2500 pregnancies). When twinning does occur, 95% of the time it is the result of dual fertilization of multiple ova. The other 5% of twinned pregnancies are "identical" twins.
Growth Rate & Stages
Elves mature physically within 18 - 22 years, much the same as humans. Elves live between seven and eight centuries.
Ecology and Habitats
The aquatic elves prefer to live in water and have an expanded respiratory system, which allows them to breathe underwater. They are capable of survival on land, though their skin dries out and they become very uncomfortable and susceptible to various skin conditions and diseases the longer they remain away from water.
Aquatic elves also possess a resistance to colder temperatures that their land-based cousins do not enjoy, as they have learned to live in the cold depths of the seas.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Elves possess enhanced aural and visual acuity. In particular, they are able to see more effectively in dim and low light conditions than do humans and some other humanoids.
