Inn of the Laughing Fountain
The Inn of the Laughing Fountain is a wealthy tavern and hotel within the desert town of Ka-Tepi. Located advantageously next to the main square of the town, it is one of the hotels of choice for well-off travellers and wealthy merchants accompanying caravans. It is run by Al-Jazeed and his family.
The front of the building is decorated with a fountain built into the wall, featuring a statue of a laughing dryad pouring a cascade of water from her hands cupped overhead. As the water pours down over the statue, it does indeed sound as if it is chuckling.
Thick walls and deep-set windows ensure the occupants remain cool even during the heat of the midday sun, while frequent patrols by the town Watch (who receive good prices for hearty meals from Al-Jazeed, who is a cousin of Watchman Rasheed) ensure it is left alone by thieves. The local urchins also keep careful eyes on the building, as Al-Jazeed and his wife often hire them for small errands and ensure each of the children receives at least one good meal a day.
The menu features a number of delicacies, both local and from wider afield, and liquor from all over the continent. One of the drinks is Velunan fireamber, a golden brandy with shimmering flecks swirling through it. Smelling of apples, cinnamon and chilli, it is extraordinarily powerful. A small tulip glass of it sells for a gold piece.
