Kobolds

"A kobold once stole my boots while I was sleeping in their den... and 'replaced' them with a crude drawing of boots. Can't even be mad; that's impressive cheek."   -Field Scribe Eustace Theren
Kobolds are diminutive yet cunning dragonkin. These small, reptilian creatures often serve their larger draconic counterparts, in roles that range from caretakers of dragon lairs to guardians of hoarded secrets.

Description

Kobolds do not usually possess the immense physical or magical prowess of their dragon creators or drakoryn. They instead have their own sets of skills and attributes that make them valuable.   They are small, often reaching only about 2 to 3 feet in height, with scaly skin that can vary in color, usually matching the hue of their dragon mother. Their physical appearance is reminiscent of dragons on a much smaller scale, with sharp teeth and claws for digging and defense, though they lack wings.

Cunning

What kobolds lack in strength, they make up for in cunning and resourcefulness. They are adept at setting traps, mining, and haphazard crafting, making them excellent lair keepers and treasure guardians.

Social Structure

Kobolds live in tightly knit communities, often found in and around dragon lairs or in hidden underground warrens. Their society is hierarchical, with the strongest or most intelligent kobold leading the group.

Relationship with Dragons

The bond between kobolds and dragons is one of symbiotic reverence. Kobolds worship dragons as demigods, serving them with a loyalty that is ingrained in their very blood. Kobolds often serve as the first line of defense for a dragon's lair, using their knowledge of the terrain and their trap-making skills to ward off intruders.   In cases where a dragon has laid true dragon eggs, kobolds also take on the role of caretakers, ensuring the eggs are kept at the correct temperature and protected from threats.

Creation

Unlike the birth of full-blooded dragons, which requires the union of two dragons of the same color, kobold eggs are laid by female dragons through an asexual process that does not necessitate a mate. These eggs come in clutches ranging from 4-16.   This allows female dragons to create protectors and servants without the need for a male dragon. Some use them to ensure that their lairs and treasures are always guarded. This allows them to maintain standing in draconic hierarchy amidst their stronger, male counterparts.
