Suneater Bear

Written by Chrundle_the_Great

Origin

Common in the Feywild, but not native to that plane, it is hotly debated where they came from or who created these creatures. Suneater bears can sometimes be found in Tallamh, owing to the many portals that exist between this land and that of the fey.

Description

Suneater bears are large magical beasts. Although called "bears," their heads resemble those of giant owls with round eyes and sharpened beaks. Covered in fur and feathers, their hides come in all colors of sunlight, ranging from the deep purple of twilight to the bright gold of dawn. Additionally, frond-like feathers sprout from their forelegs and in a half-circle around their heads. Their claws are as sharp, if not sharper, than their owlbear counterparts. Also, they can open their maws extremely wide, either for feeding on sunlight or for screeching at intruders in their lair.

Behavior

These creatures are single-minded in their desire to feed on sunlight. In the eternal twilight of the Feywild, they have a constant but unsatisfying meal. By comparison, the day-night cycles of Tallamh allow them to feast ravenously while the sun rises. However, during night, the bear rages at its interrupted meal, and those intense feelings affect its surroundings, which can cause other creatures to become frenzied.   Forced to adopt a diurnal cycle in Tallamh, suneater bears prefer high vantage points for feeding on sunlight. After sunset, they sleep in dark caves. They are usually solitary and chase other creatures from their lair, except for the sunsprites who watch over them during the night and alert them to any intruders or potential threats. Suneater bears are extremely territorial and will defend their lair with unbridled fury.

Abilities

Suneater bears are weakest during the nighttime, but they are still exceptionally dangerous predators. Their coats are heatproof and photoresistant, making them immune to both radiant and fire damage. Also, their frond-like feathers shimmer in bright light, allowing them to sunstep and teleport while in well-lit areas. Finally, they can breathe intense light beams and emit blinding flashes with their frond-like feathers.   When critically wounded, suneater bears can use their stored sunlight to encase themselves in a radiant cocoon to rapidly heal their wounds. Also, the cocoon radiates a powerful aura of madness, causing nearby creatures to attack friend and foe alike.   Suneater bears become more powerful in proportion to the amount of direct sunlight and their rage. If allowed to feed on Tallamh's intense daylight, even young bears can overpower seasoned hunters.

Usage

The frond-like feathers are dichromatic, causing it to change its hue in different intensities of sunlight. This material can be used to fashion a cloak that allows to user to sunstep and emit blinding flashes. However, in its unworked form, the feathers radiate an aura of intense heat and should be handled with caution.   Suneater bears metabolize sunlight into pure radiant energy. The sinew of their spines can be used to craft bows that store sunlight to create radiant arrows, which dissipate on contact.
