Treasures of Sky and Stone

Written by Chrundle_the_Great

General Summary

Pleased with Kapital's assistance in Velnoya, the mage Okyron hires them to investigate the starfalls further into the Griff Mountains. Also, he says they can keep whatever treasures they find, so long as they put an end to the "otherworldly influences in the mountains."   The party rest briefly in the small mining town of Grod, where they discover larger factions scheming and townspeople hurting. Agreeing to help, the party venture to Deadlow Peak, where no one, least of all them, could predict what would happen next.   Below is a ballad narrating the adventure. It is unclear who wrote it.

The Badly Burned Bard

High in the mountains
In a town of black glass
Through merry Grod our heroes first pass
But the giants take slaves
The mines choked with ash
No one is safe, no laddie nor lass
  Oswald sings praises
Pad Tole so swift
And Hjalfi, there's nothing she can't lift
The mayor is delighted
He promises gifts
For rescuing his folk from their perilous shifts
  'Side the Church of Coin
Is a carriage of gold hue
Carrying the gladiator Mai Hardoo
Her arrows are poisoned
She escapes with her crew
Battered and bruised, the heroes feel blue
At nightfall the tavern is lively, drunken, and loud
By Oswald's performance the crowd is wowed
The tinkerer Rollo
Gives him advice
In the mines he best keep up his guard
'Or else you'll become a badly burned bard!'
  Down to the smithy
For obsidian blades
Only one guard offers his aid
A youngster named Geoff
Only in eighth grade
Despite their protests, by their side he stayed
  Inside the quarry
The miners are hurt
Ogres and giants watch over their work
Collecting rare metals
Their guards so alert
In faraway shadows the heroes still lurk
  They walk into camp
With deceit and speed
'What can we do to see the miners set free?'
But the giants are cunning
To heroes' aid they agree
With no intent of letting anyone leave
The caverns grow hotter and hotter with ev'ry pace
Our heroes by monsters of fire and flame are chased
Swarms of ashen rats
And oozes so gray
Oswald avoids being charred
But surely the bard is now mentally scarred!
  Harpoon-headed horrors
Salamanders with spears
The bard's knees are shaking with abject fear
The heroes fight bravely
With blade, fist, and cheers
Before the prisoners they soon appear
  Through doors of strange metal
The heroes find a gate
To the Plane of Fire, with sentries irate
The heroes befuddled
Fire-beasts accelerate
And the coal-eyed son of Surtr watches with hate
  Pad Tole crosses the rift
Hjalfi shouts his name
And an obsidian crab the samurai tames
The titan swings his hammer
For the heroes he aims
His portal crumbles, the heroes he blames
The gate to Tallamh quickly begins flickering out
The crab flings Hjalfi from the Land of Eternal Drought
Pad Tole, saddened
Holds out his blade
He holds Oswald in high regard
'It was never my story,' replies the badly burned bard!
  With thunderous fist
And a skald's battlecry
Oswald launches Pad Tole sky-high
He lands with Hjalfi
And the bard waves goodbye
And leaps into battle before he dies
As the fires vanish, the warriors in relief breathe
They lived through a nightmare, and the miners are freed
They mourn the loss of their brave bard
He holds them both in high regard
Hjalfi, the Hammer, strong and battle-scarred!
Pad Tole, wise samurai and of the crabs guard!
