Crimson Desert of Ashta'Ai

Unforgiving red sands

Ashta'Ai is one of the largest deserts in the known world and as such, much mystery and intrigue has been built around it. On these sands, legends such as Zabra Niel, Hamal Abrietas and Morainess were born. Surrounded by numerous coastal cities and trading ports, Ashta'ai ever-so-often has caravans ploughing through its great dunes and crimson sands. One would be wise, however, to hire professional aid in crossing the desert, as the dangerous sands house many horros not found anywhere else in the world. Home to the strange magical terrors called "Castigators", many scholars believe that these sands perhaps once housed those who reigned mastery over elves. However, any ruins suggesting that are yet to be found...

Geography

One of the most searing locations above-ground, Ashta'Ai desert has much earned its reputation where it is equally glorified as a near-own-entity and feared as something large, ancient and untameable. Oasises are incredibly rare here as are small pockets of water, which has lead to the innovation of many people crossing the desert in seeking for moisture below ground.
So unrelenting are the heated desert winds that finding even slightest cover in the form of palm trees on Ashta'Ais shores is a rare sight. These vast shores change gradually from the sanguine desert sands to plain dust and offer little in the form of relief to lost travelers. North of the arid desert there are vast grounds of savannah with plentiful of beasts, often times used by locals as hunting grounds. One is much more likely to find habitation here then they are in the actual desert itself.

Ecosystem

Ashta'Ai is home to a creature often compared to unicorns, even if they are much more common in sight. These equines called "Aurahorns" often roam in packs and use their enormous, circular horns to dig out moist from the red desert sands. Feeding on dead, ancient underground roots these aurahorns travel in certain cycles, moving with the rare cool breezes of the desert.
