Kingdom of Duroc

Orrann Cras’Simmerus Gors’Duroc lead the smallest of the major divisions in the Darsundim. They were small because the Duroc clan demanded that any who passed Rit’amand must also pass the trail of poisoned chalice, a harrowing ordeal that risks the life and sanity of the participant in exchange for awakening their latent psionic potential.   Orrann shaped his people into the most potent weapon at Rarsand’s disposal. It was a power than many envied, but Rarsand was wary of. Orrann had no qualms about throwing his people’s lives away for his own glory. Rarsand knew he could not trust his kingdom to such a madman, nor could he simply throw away such a powerful clan, so he made the Duroc the spearhead of his offensives during the first brimstone war. While this was a position of great honor for Clan Duroc, Orrann felt the brunt of Rarsand’s reckless offensives and poorly planned retreats.   Orrann could not object to how Rarsand used his clan’s forces without sacrificing his honor, but the failures and losses wore away Orrann’s credibility as a potential successor while stripping away any hope of taking the crown by force. The Duroc’s depleted numbers meant that Orrann’s rule would not last if they tried to hold their existing land. King Orrann decreed that the Duroc shall retreat into the caves near Starnhald Duroc. The capital was converted into a forward defense and the infrastructure of kingdom was moved underground.

Government

The Kingdom of Duroc is ruled by Orrann Cras’Simmerus Gors’Duroc. His main advisor is referred to as the Cortex, and he is chosen by a cabal known as the Circle. The Cortex has a level of influence above even the other Ger-Ricar. The last and least of Orrann’s advisors is the Echo, who represents the Diamond Council. The Diamond Council is a collection of clan elders, trade guild leaders, church officials and college headmasters.   The Diamond Council is too concerned with their own internal politics to realize that their influence over the king has waned. Ostensibly, they are charged with drafting policy for the King on matters not directly related to war. Of course, the decision for which issue are or are not war related is King Orrann’s, so their real power is over matters that the Ger-Cahar has no interest in. The military has direct control over the territories they protect. Civilians groups exist to see to much of the day-to-day affairs, but each settlements has a “military governor” whose job is to ensure that any decisions made by the military are enforced in the city. Law and order is also maintained by the military, but civilian volunteers supplement those forces.
