Makokou
The kingdom is one of the few nations that were able to conquer the Black Marsh. Having some kind of blessing (or curse) put on their cities and towns, the swamps of the Black Marsh gives sway to their civilization, allowing them to grow and prosper. The people believe that it is their rulers, the Black Dragons, who signed a pact centuries ago with the ancestors of the populace, the dragons saved them and all they had to do to repay them is to serve them (as well as their children). These creatures are said to have control over the Black Marsh.
History
The Black Marsh is an unforgiving place. Long ago, during the Fourth Age, The Calamity, many Islanders fled the war with the Iconian Empire, seeking a haven in those trying times they found the Black Marsh as the safest place. The empire wasn't interested in conquering such a place, at least for now. However, the people over the generations became poor and at the start of the Fifth Age, Current Age, they were at death's door. It was the Black Dragons of the marshes that saw an opportunity. The people made the deal with the scaly folk, by saving them, they sold their freedom and the freedom of their descendants. Centuries later, the couple of villages became cities and a big kingdom of Makokou. The Black Dragons rule over the people, who have no other choice but to serve the dragons because, without their blessing, the Black Marsh would take them.
