The Jeweled Markets
History
Located on the northwest side of the Naud River, the Jeweled Markets began as a collection of warehouses, river docks, and roadside stops in 2nd century AS. During the War of Three cities, the Jeweled Markets leveraged its geographic position to begin developing a monopoly on the trade of raw metals and lumber. With an influx of wealth and a temporary power vacuum caused by the ongoing war between Eleznór, The Village, and the Union, the Jeweled Markets was officially established in 209 AS. What began as a loose affiliation of guild bosses, affluent merchants, and heads of extraction companies has developed into a bustling center of trade throughout Marsétan. Since the signing of the Lotus Treaty, governance of the district has shifted towards an ostensibly democratic process. However, it is an open secret that those who hold the purse strings, hold decision making power in the Jeweled Markets. These days most goods in Marsétan licit or otherwise travel through the Jeweled Markets. District affiliated caravans and patrols are a common sight for those living northwest of the Naud River. Architecturally the Jeweled Market gives off a sense of opulence and spaciousness. Buildings often sport columns, verandas, and balconies under low pitched gable and dormer roofs. Large windows are set into a mix of brick and wood shingled siding. The buildings are construct of various materials from pine and red wood to brick, basalt, and granite. Much of the district includes wide avenues penned in by large multi-family homes. Many sit on large lots filled with monocultured greenspace. Open markets and parks dot the landscape. The riverfront lots are a mix of industrial docks and The Village and Asdraeck inspired apartments and condominiums. The district is cut in half by the Suncrest Road which travels from the Wall down across the Naud River into The Village. Most activity radiates out from Suncrest Market, a central square that contains a sprawling expanse of stalls and greenspace. The recently established central bank of Marsétan can be found in Suncrest market, as can the Golden Hall, the Consortium's original meeting space and present representative of the Jeweled Market. Lively at all times of day, whatever you are buying or selling, there is sure to be someone in the markets who can provide.
