Basic Information

Anatomy

Most aspects of human physiology are closely homologous to corresponding aspects of animal physiology. The human body consists of the legs, the torso, the arms, the neck, and the head.   Humans have proportionately shorter palates and much smaller teeth than other primates. They are the only primates to have short, relatively flush canine teeth. Humans have characteristically crowded teeth, with gaps from lost teeth usually closing up quickly in young individuals. Humans are gradually losing their third molars, with some individuals having them congenitally absent.   It is estimated that the worldwide average height for an adult human male is about 171 cm (5 ft 7 in), while the worldwide average height for adult human females is about 159 cm (5 ft 3 in). Shrinkage of stature may begin in middle age in some individuals but tends to be typical in the extremely aged. The average mass of an adult human is 59 kg (130 lb) for females and 77 kg (170 lb) for males. Like many other conditions, body weight and body type are influenced by both genetic susceptibility and environment and varies greatly among individuals.   Humans have a far faster and more accurate throw than other animals. Humans are also among the best long-distance runners in the animal kingdom, but slower over short distances. Humans' thinner body hair and more productive sweat glands help avoid heat exhaustion while running long distances.

The Nomads

Nomads are humans that inhabited land untouched by the Pauri Empire. They can vary in their physical appearance but are largely known to be large in stature and retain certain bestial features in their appearance such as thick facial and body hair and naturally heavy muscle mass. Nomad populations that still remain in the world are sparse and have largely integrated with the other human ethnic groups, however they still have small tribal populations across Vilia.

The Reedlings

Reedlings were humans who evolved for dwelling in the wetlands and swamps of the world. The Reedlings are distinguished by their pale and pallid expressions, often noted for resembling drowned humans. They have lips that are blue, seemingly from oxygen starvation, and their hair typically takes on a dark and slick shade. They are typically short and slender in their build. They have certain oxygen-binding proteins in their muscles which allow them to breathe underwater for prolonged periods of time. The Reedlings are typically native to the marshlands of northwestern and northeastern Thallia.

The Thall

The Thall share their ancestry with the Dwarves and as a result, are known to be shorter than the average human and also more stocky in their build. They are adapted to living underground and have particularly strong eyesight in dark places. Their complexions are typically known to be fair. Thall predominantly inhabit the northern continent of Thallia.

Dorani

The Dorani are lean individuals of varying height known to have tanned complexions, darker hair colours, and brightly coloured eyes. The Dorani are most prominent on the continent of Doran, however, have substantial populations in southern Vandor as well.

Caradan

Natives of the southern continent of Caradac. The Caradan most prominently live surrounding the Caradan Desert and are known for their dusky brown skin, hair, and eyes. The Caradan evolved to survive well in the southern conditions and as a result, have a natural affinity for the desert climate.

Vandorians

Vandorians are native to the continent of Vandor and are known to have fair complexions and to have lean, and light builds. The Vandorians are known to share much of their ancestry with the Gnomes and Fae and thus have a natural affinity for magic and are gifted climbers.

Ecology and Habitats

Humans are the most spread out and diverse of all the sentient species on Vilia, having built up civilisations and colonies all across the known world. Humans typically live in surface dwellings constructed of timber, stone, or clay, however, there are also those humans (particularly amongst the Thall) who are known to build their dwellings underground.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Humans are omnivorous, capable of consuming a wide variety of plant and animal material. Human groups have adopted a range of diets from purely vegan to primarily carnivorous. In some cases, dietary restrictions in humans can lead to deficiency diseases; however, stable human groups have adapted to many dietary patterns through both genetic specialisation and cultural conventions to use nutritionally balanced food sources.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

It is most common that human civilisations will mark their population with a chosen forename, as well as a second family name that links them with their relatives. This system however differs between different cultures.

History

Pre-History

Humans have evolved and migrated from the continent of Saradac, spreading out across the planet of Vilia to become what history would remember as the "First Men". By the time the Elves opened the World Gate and began the first days of the First Era, humanity had spread across Vilia as a nomadic species of hunter-gatherers.

The First Era

The Elves began a conquest of Vilia that began in the easternmost continent of Pauros, and quickly spread to incorporate colonies in each of the world's continents. Being the most versatile and diverse species on the planet, humans proved to be invaluable to the growing industry of the Pauri Empire, and they began to incorporate them into their Empire as slaves.   Using the advanced science and magic of Elven-kind, humans were mutated and evolved to suit the needs and expectations of the Empire. It is from humans that the Dwarves and Gnomes would evolve, as well as sub-species of humanity such as the Reedlings, who were adapted to survive in wetlands and to breathe underwater for prolonged periods of time.   Humans lived for thousands of years as slaves to the Pauri Empire, until the events that would sometime toward the end of the First Era wherein the human later known to history as Dalli, would be thrown through a Magical Nexus, and rather than being killed by his experience in the void, would instead emerge to become the first of humanities Sorcerers. Dalli would share his magical ability with the various subjugated species and would lead a revolution that would drive the Elves from the continents of Vandora and much of Thallia, beginning the downfall of the Pauri Empire, and beginning the Second Era.

The Second Era

Humanity began to expand across the planet, leading further revolutionary movements to effectively cast the Elves from Doran, Saradac, and Thallia. In the wake of their victories, humanity would begin to settle into new and structured civilisations, becoming the most prominent settlers of Doran and Thallia, whilst also peacefully sharing the land of Vandor. It is at this time that the human revolutionaries that formed the Grand Army of the Thall, settled into Thallia and began to live in harmony with the Dwarves. As a result, the human sub-species known as the Thall began to emerge, sharing genetic traits of both the humans and the Dwarves. Furthermore, sub-species of Half-Giants, Half-Elves, and Half-Orcs began to become more prominent.   Meanwhile, the land of Inkbar, a region of feuding petty-kingdoms largely untouched by the Elven expansion due to their close connection to the Demons of Vede began to grow in prominence. Among these petty kingdoms, humans began to intermingle with Demon-kind, marking the first stages of evolution for a new species known as the Rakshasa.   Humanity formed much of its civilised land on the promise that it would never again succumb to the cruelty and brutality of the Pauri Empire, and would forever live in freedom. This however did not last, and as the Second Era continued, and humanity lost its memory of its life in subjugation, the world would devolve into petty conflicts and power grabs, with authoritarian powers spreading all across Vilia.   At the height of these inter-species conflicts, a human Sorcerer would rise to power in the continent of Thallia and would unite the Five Warring States into a single united Empire. This human known to history as Du Khaan, would vow to put an end to the violence and chaos that had embroiled his world, by uniting all the world into a single great Empire, to be preserved by all free people, with a single benevolent ruler to ensure peace and prosperity for all of time. This new-found promise of global conquest would mark the beginning of the Third Era.

The Third Era

Du Khaan and his newly formed Khanian Empire would expand aggressively over the course of the Third Era, consuming much of Vandora and Dorani and costing hundreds of thousands of lives. The war which would be known as the War of the Second Alliance, would further displace millions and would see many more humans migrate to settle the Saradac.   The advancing Empire would force those civilisations not bound to the Khanian Empire to unite together and form the Second Alliance to defy them. This alliance would incorporate a multitude of species including the Fae, Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Djinn, and many more.   In spite of this great alliance, the Khanian Empire would continue to expand with seemingly unstoppable progress, until finally and under mysterious circumstances, the heart of their power and the centre of their leadership, the enigmatic Du Khaan would disappear.

The Fourth Era

With the disappearance of Du Khaan, the Khanian Empire quickly began to deteriorate, as the Second Alliance made quick and substantial victories against them. Within a matter of years, the Khanian Empire devolved into a series of smaller kingdoms, republics, dictatorships, and theocracies, all warring against each other for shares of the once-united land.   The Fourth Era would see the rise of multiple human Empires, never as expansionist as the Khanian or Pauri Empires, but still formidable in their own respects. The greatest of these would be the Mastorian Empire, a power that would grow from the administrators that once inhabited the Khanian Empire.   The Fourth Era would draw to a close with the spread of the Plague of the Dead, a brutal and devastating plague that would see hordes of the undead spread across Vilia. Almost a quarter of the world's population was wiped out through this tragic event, and in this destructive time, no species was effected worse than humanity.   The Fourth Era ended officially, as the power of the Necrotic Plague would cease its spread, and the forces of the living were slowly but surely able to drive back the hordes of the undead and drive them back into the grave.

The Fifth Era

In the wake of such terrible loss, and a severe depopulation of Vilia, the many global powers began to internalise and focus on rebuilding from their own losses. This resulted in generations of global stability, albeit with severe damage to global infrastructure leading to an era of mass-migration.   Further Empires began to rise and fall with the newly changed dynamics of power, and the greatest of the human Empires (the Mastorian Empire) began to wane in its influence.
