The Blessing Of Helios
The crown of Carafon Hill is riddled with a mixture of natural sink holes and artifical shafts, created by the construction of the The Tyrant's Palace and as a means to let light and air into the Summit Level of Carafon. By far the largest of these is a circular chimney known as the Blessing of Helios, which opens up perhaps a little too close to the Tyrant's Palace. Opening out into the ceiling of the Summit Level, the hole continues further into the ground, directly underneath, emerging in the Main Gates Level, directly above the high altar of the Cathedral of Hidden Radiance.
Localized Phenomena
It is no accident that the Cathedral of Hidden Radiance was built directly below this natural shaft. The Church of Hidden Radiance is able to make great use of the times when the sun shines directly down through the hole to reach the Market Gates level of the city, since this enhances their worship of the Hidden Radiance. It is the church that names the shaft, the Blessing of Helios, in honour of the sunlight that they receive from it.

Climate
The Blessing of Helios is beneficial for the ventilation of the Main Gates level of the Cavern City, allowing air which enters through the four great entrances at this level to escape upwards from the very centre of the level. This has an indirect benefit throughout the city, cooling it and making it possible to support the high level of population living underground.
