Summer Camp - 2024 Pledge Article

Prepwork

Week 1

Assignment: Consider what kind of changes would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.   I've been reconsidering Alikaine, Loreweaver's background quite a bit lately. The decision that I came to was to change her relationship with Ember, The Fire Sorceress from merely being best friends to being sisters as well. This helps the story in a few ways as it strengthens the family themes and raises the stakes for the two of them during the story.   Assignment: Based on this, decide how many prompts you'll go for during Summer Camp. Then, download the pledge document and fill it accordingly!   Last year, I set my goal for a Bronze Badge but ended up earning the Diamond one instead. I'm hoping it's good luck, so I'll be setting my goal for Bronze again. I am worried that I could end up over building for my world and some of the content won't actually contribute to my actual novel. I want a reasonable goal and if I exceed it, that will be a bonus.

Week 2

Assignment: Consider what kinds of refuge would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.   I'll be fleshing out The Hatway for the Gnomes and Harmony Heights. These are much needed safe spaces in an otherwise dangerous and dreary world after The Ashen Eclipse and The Infernal Deluge. It would be nice to focus on Kaesta's personal spaces aboard The Escapist's Fantasy as well.

Week 3

Assignment: Consider what kind of beliefs would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.   I've covered the three main world views of the peoples in the virtual reality known as The Cosmos or The Dream. So far, I haven't given any thought to Kaesta and Asimov's views of their world, The Dark Cosmos. Their beliefs are something that I would like to explore. I know that Kaesta will be having conversations with both Arastoo and The Oracle about the fact that The Cosmos is not real. It would be prudent for her to express her viewpoint about her own world as well.   Assignment: Find art and pictures that inspire you, and grab a map if you don't have one (and need one).   Midjourney has been a fun outlet for me for a few years now. I've generated tens of thousands of images. It's a great stress reliever for me and I intend to continue using Midjourney for the foreseeable future.

Week 4

Assignment: Consider what kind of decay would fit in with your world's themes, genre, and other foundational points.   The Ashen Eclipse and The Infernal Deluge has had terrible consequences for the world of Akir. The crop failures and even The Oracle's malaise will be in the forefront. The Dark Galaxy has seen the near extinction of the Human race after The Syntax War. The loneliness of the survivors will also be quite evident.

Thank you so much! I'm starting to get excited! I'll be nice to have something fun and creative to focus on for the next month. Can't wait to bank a ton of articles for my reading list for the reading challenge afterwards. :D

Good luck! You make a really good point about over-building... something I'm very guilty of. I hope the prompts inspire you, help serve your story and you have fun too.   (ps: i find just adding a space at end of article can force the auto-save-update in WA... but it does get super frustrating sometimes... especially when just adding @ links)

Thank you! World Building can be a ton of fun. It's an addictive activity for sure.   Ooops! I usually go back and delete that line about junk text once WA successfully saves
