Session Three: The Mystery Deepens.
General Summary
We last left off with Cannelle, Nyx, Valna and Cora Tealeaf finishing their meeting with Volo after rescuing Renaer Neverember and Floon at the Yawning Portal. The party retreats downstairs to have a drink. After a few rounds, Renaer enters the Yawning Portal and makes his way over to the party. He tells the party he heard Volo was short some gold pieces and covers Volo’s payment to the party. Renaer throws in a small bonus and pays for the party’s drinks and dinner. Renaer encourages the party to accept Volo’s offer of the Trollskull Manor as payment. Renaer tells the party he spoke with some of his friends and he confirms his father embezzled the money which caused him to be dismissed as the Open Lord. The nobles are not publically denouncing Renaer’s father because they are playing the noble game and may want favor from him in the future. After telling the party he will honor a favor for them, Renaer departs for home.
Cora Tealeaf, in casual conversation with the group, tells them how much she dislikes the circus and carnivals because how they treat their animals. She tells the party that is how she rescued Iris. Nyx and Valna state how they saw an advertisement for a carnival named Fredrick’s Marvelous Carnival of Wonders coming to a town near Waterdeep called Saltmarsh. Cora remarks how she wants to visit it to liberate any animal she finds. After a few more rounds of celebratory drinks, the party retires for the night.
The next morning the party meets Volo at the magistrate’s office in the Castle Ward so he can sign over the deed to the Trollskull Manor to the party. They meet Magistrate Kylynne Silmerhelve which the party discovers is a tiefling. After reviewing the necessary information, the party signs the deed and takes ownership of the Trollskull Manor. Volo tells the party his friend can meet them today and he has a nice lunch planned for them to discuss their concerns to his friend. The party departs to the Trollskull Manor to see what they just took ownership of.
The party arrives at the Trollskull Manor to find it has seen better days. They enter the tavern to explore the layout of the building. Nyx starts to use magic to fix some of the damaged furniture with Cora while Valna explores the seating area. While looking around, Valna heard a moaning and saw one of the sheets on the tables move. Valna, taking a step back behind Nyx, tells the party what she had seen. Cora thinking Valna was seeing things approach the table. As Cora gets close to the table, the sheet flies off and over Cora. Nyx response by casting glitter and the party sees an outline of a small figure move from the table and to the bar by a chalk board. On the chalk board it is written “friend or foe” in elvish. After a short conversation, the party discovered the ghost of the former owner of the Trollskull Manor, Lif, haunts the manor after being murder over a game of Three Dragon Ante. Lif is happy to see the party is fixing the place up and will remain happy if the party treats the manor with respect. The party explores the remaining areas of the manor and claims their respected rooms as they discuss the possibilities of reopening the Trollskull Manor for business. With time running short, the party departs the Trollskull Manor to meet Volo.
The party arrives at the Seaside Inn where Volo had a private room arranged for their meeting. Volo guides the party to the backroom where a five course lunch is prepared. Volo introduces the party to his friend, Mirt. Cora Tealeaf and Nyx notice Mirt has a silver pin of a harp on his cloak. Mirt tells the part he has heard of the marks they bare. About three century ago, a group of evil deities (Bane and Myrkul) stole the Table of Ao and forced the gods of the Realms into mortal form. This was called the Times of Trouble. No longer immortal on the material plane of the Realms, the evil deities began to hunt other deities to kill them and take their powers. During this time, the deities turned to the people of the Realms and selected a few to assist them to survive or hunt down the other deities. They were imbued with power from the deities which passed on through their offspring. Those whom have the power will have a mark. Ao discovered what happened and reset the balance of the deities undoing most of the damaged done by Bane, Myrkul and Shar.
The ones who were selected by the deities which tried to protect the order of the deities and the Realms were called Protectors. Their marks will glow a slightly blue color. The ones who were selected by the deities which tried to destroy the other deities were called Destroyers. Their marks would swirl with a smoke like color. If a Protector or Destroyer killed another Destroyer or Protector, they would gain the slain power and destroy the slain's family line wiping them all out in a blink of an eye. No one is able to figure out which deity's power is in the Destroyer or Protector by the mark. A Destroyer and a Protector will be able to detect each other if they are close to each other. Destroyers and Protectors can handle and harness the power of raw magic which are called Pools of Radiance. Pools of Radiance are small pockets in the Realms where raw magic from the weave as spilled into the Realms due to the Times of Troubles.
About 75 years ago, Bane, Cyric and Shar attempted to force several deities to have their avatars reborn on the Realms which would cause them to be temporary mortal. This caused the weave to shift and awaken the Protectors and Destroyers. A group of Protectors, dubbed the Guardians, were able to stop Bane, Cyric and Shar but their story was lost and no one knows it.
The party tells Mirt about the mysterious woman and Mirt says the mysterious woman is Mystra, the goddess of magic and the weave. Mirt is concern because if Mystra is asking for help, Bane, Cyric and Shar maybe attempting something again. Mirt tells the party about a mysterious ship which recently arrived in Waterdeep. The ship is called the Serpent's Eye and when it arrived in port no one from the guilds or docks were allowed to off load it.
Mirt was able to track what he thinks is the Captain of the ship (a sun elf) and his body guard (a half-orc) to the middle of Waterdeep but lost them. Mirt is not sure if the Serpent’s Eye connected but he thinks it is odd timing with the ship arriving at the same time the party did. Mirt tells the party his resources are stretched thin and asks them if they could look into the ship and the sun elf. The party agrees and Mirt tells the party to contact one of his contacts named Maxeene at Hemmerem's Stables. She travels the city every day and has eyes and ears to the comings and goings. The party finishes their lunch and part ways with Mirt and Volo and makes their way to Hemmerem's Stables.
At the stables, the party inquiries about Maxeene and the stable hand seemed slightly confused. He leads the party to a stall with the name Maxeene written on it. Inside the stable is a large draft horse. The party tells the stable hand they are looking to possibly buy Maxeene and give him five gold pieces. Satisfied with his gold, the stable hand leaves the party with Maxeene. The party asks the draft horse the phrase Mirt told them and the horse, Maxeene, talks to them in common. She tells the party Mirt pays to have her taken care of but the stable hand has been a pain recently. The party tells Maxeene they will let Mirt know. The party asks about the sun elf and Maxeene tells them she does remember the sun elf because he was holding a small hand keg which did not leave his side. The sun elf and half-orc were dropped off at a manor in the Sea Ward which Maxeene gives the party the address. Maxeene tells the party she has not seen her driver since dropping off the sun elf. Maxeene thinks the sun elf is called Davil. Nyx ask Maxeene if she could look into her mind to see what the sun elf and the half-orc looked like. Nyx was able to get a description from Maxeene’s mind and relays what they look at. The party thank Maxeene for the information and decide to check out the ship first and then the manor house.
At the docks, the party spots the Serpent’s Eye anchored a few meters from the dock with two rowboats moving from the ship to the docks near a warehouse. The party notices two figures overlooking the operation, a drow and a human figure in heavy armor. The party pauses for a few minutes to determine how to get on board the ship. Valna wanted to take a straight approach but they decide on Nyx plan of disguising herself to look like the half-orc and see if they could get aboard. The rest of the part are squeezed in Nyx’s familiar’s pocket as she changes herself to look like the half-orc. She approaches the drow on the dock and was able to bluff her way on the ship. During their conversation, they found out the sun elf is not the captain but the drow on the dock is. The drow was upset the sun elf, later to be revealed to be Davin Starsong, was taking too long and it was messing up his time table.
Once aboard the ship Nyx was able to locate the Captain’s quarters and breaks into in. She releases the rest of the party from the familiar pocket and the party searches the Captain’s quarters. After searching the area, the party finds the ship’s manifest and the Captain’s log book. Deciding their time was getting short, the party returns into Nyx’s familiar’s pocket and Nyx departs the ship.
The party makes a quick stop to unload what they found at the Trollskull Manor before pushing on to the manor house in the Sea Ward where Davil was dropped off.
