Halfling
Halflings are a race of people that, at first glance, appear to be human. However, they possess animal ears and occasionally other traits, setting them aparth from actual humans.
Basic Information
Anatomy
For the most part, halflings appear to be human. They have two arms and hands; two legs and feet (with some exceptions). However, all halflings share traits with an animal of some sort. This usually manifests as animal ears and a tail, but may also result in additional traits, such as sharper teeth, barbed tongues, sharper and faster-growing nails, and other such traits.
A common list of halflings is as follows:
- Bear halflings: Bear halflings have bear ears and a short, round tail. Bear halflings possess enhanced strength and hearing, as well as enhanced stamina. In the winter, bear halflings become somnolent and sluggish; they may sleep for whole days at a time.
- Canine halflings: Canine halflings are distinct from dog halflings in that their designation only includes wild dogs, such as jackals, coyotes, hyenas, dingos, and wolves. Regardless of species, canine halflings possess canine ears and tail of varying size, shape, and coloration. They all possess enhanced speed, hearing, sense of smell and eyesight.
- Cat halflings: Cat halflings typically possess cat ears and a tail, both of varying pattern and color. They also have barbed tongues, similar to that of a regular cat. Feline halflings' nails are blunted at first, but they eventually become razor-sharp via constant maintenance by the halfling (compulsive nail biting and nail filing is a common behavior). Cat halflings have enhanced hearing and vision, and can see well even in the dark.
- Dog halflings: Dog halflings have ears and a tail of varying color/pattern. Their ears can be rounded, sharp, floppy, long, or straight. Dog halflings typically correspond to a specific dog breed. Common traits include enhanced hearing, eyesight, and sense of smell.
- Driders are arachnid halflings.
- Harpies are an avian type of halfling.
- Mouse and rat halflings: Rodent halflings possess rodent ears, whiskers, and a furless tail. These halflings' traits are usually an enhanced sense of smell, enlarged front teeth, enhanced bite force, and enhanced speed.
- Naga are considered by many to be halflings; lamia are treated as a separate race.
- Rabbit and hare halflings: Rabbit and hare halflings have long ears, which may either point straight up, or hang down to the sides, similar to a lop rabbit. They have a short fluffy tail which may either be round or ovoid. Lagomorphic halflings possess enhanced heaing, eyesight, speed, and sense of smell. They also have enhanced bite force, and enhanced leg strength; this makes their kicks somewhat dangerous.
- Sheep halflings: Sheep halflings have sheep ears and occasionally horns, as well as a small, fluffy tail. Sheep halflings' hair is almost always curly. They have no further special traits to speak of.
- Swine halflings: Swine halflings, such as pigs and boars, have pig ears and a long, curly tail. For the most part, they have no further defining traits, save one: swine halflings possess an incredibly strong digestive system, and can consume and process almost any food, even if it is rotten, moldy, or otherwise unfit for regular consumption.
- Vulpine halflings possess two fox ears, as well as a long furry tail. They have slightly enhanced intellect, as well as enhanced speed, eyesight and hearing.
