Hell

"Omnibenevolent. That's funny, right? You like that one? It's a 'hell' of a problem to reconcile that phrase with this place. Get it? Oh sure, the Surface is livable. But entering the mortal realm gets us killed by her minions, and we get sent right back here. We all feel it. Rylitus got the bulk of it, no doubt about that. But everyone here, mortal souls and hellkind alike... we all feel that resentment. That rage. Make no mistake... That Goddess of Light is anything but benevolent. The only thing that brings me joy is the notion she has to answer to an omnipotent, petulant child. Between that thought and the smoking... I manage pretty well."   -Deremos Graham Avencia
Hell is the realm of devils, arch imps, and imps. Contrary to popular belief, Hell is not entirely a burning wasteland. It has cities, towns, and villages, just like Heaven. Hell is infinitely large, and can only be accessed via the entrance portal, help from a devil, teleport, or death.

Geography

Hell is an enormous cave system, comprised of many layers. The layers are called "circles" and they are as follows:
  • Surface: The surface of Hell is where most of Hell's civilization is. The cave walls, ceiling and floor are all comprised of a reddish stone exclusive to Hell. Lava pours in from the ceiling or walls at various locations, and creates pools, rivers, and lakes of varying sizes. Towns, cities and houses are scattered throughout this layer. The Gates of Hell are also located here; two gigantic metal doors blocking the portal out. A Cerberus guards these gates. Below the surface layer of Hell begin the Seven Circles. Each Circle is dedicated to one of the Seven Sins, and the worse the sin, the deeper the circle.
  • First Circle: The first circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Lust. Here, the souls who sinned are tortured with eternal seduction and temptation by succubi and incubi. If a sinner touches or reciprocates the devil's flirting however, they are immediately attacked and stabbed hundreds of times. Then they are healed and the process begins anew.
  • Second Circle: The second circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Gluttony. Here, the souls who sinned are tortured with eternal starvation and thirst, and are forced to work empty fields where no food ever grows. If at any point they stop working, they are flayed with steel-tipped whips until they resume their work.
  • Third Circle: The third circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Sloth. The souls in this circle are trapped in an endless field of fast-acting quicksand. The only way they can remain afloat is by continuing to move forward. If they sink, they are forced to suffocate without end, forever.
  • Fourth Circle: The fourth circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Greed. In this circle, sinners must melt, forge, and finish gold coins with their bare hands. This means they must reach into molten metal without protection of any kind. They are not allowed to have any of the gold, and if a sinner is caught stealing, their arms and legs will be ripped from their body repeatedly, before the sinner will be sent back to work.
  • Fifth Circle: The fifth circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Pride. Here, the sinners are not permitted clothing of any kind. They are forced to walk naked in an endless desert, with sun beating down on them. Sinners in this circle are completely oblivious to each other, and cannot hear or see other sinners of Pride. Therefore, in their eyes, they have nobody to talk to or brag to about their achievements in life, and are completely alone.
  • Sixth Circle: The sixth circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Envy. Here, sinners are suspicious of each other, and perceive each other as each having the thing the other wanted most in life. With encouragement from devils, they fight and maim each other to try and get it, only to find out afterwards that there was nothing there at all. It doesn't take long before they attack each other again, and the cycle continues forever.
  • Seventh Circle: The seventh circle of Hell is dedicated to the Sin of Wrath. Sinners here are part of a great arena, and engage in battles with devils. The angrier a sinner gets in battle, the weaker he gets, and the heavier his weapon will feel. When a sinner gets angry enough that they can no longer battle efficiently, both the devil they were fighting and the audience will leap upon them, to rip them to shreds. They will then be fully healed and sent back into the waiting area. Due to the length of the line and waiting time, a sinner may not see another battle for two hundred years, much to their chagrin.
  • Dark Circle: The Dark Circle is the last circle in Hell, but very few devils actually know about it, and the ones who do have lived thousands of years. It is located much deeper down into Hell, far beyond any of the other circles. Here, pitch-black darkness reigns supreme. It is impossible to see very far ahead of you, even with a light of some kind. No matter how far you walk in any direction, when you look behind you, you will be back at the entrance. Those who know about the Circle of Darkness say that if you do reach the center, you will be granted an audience with the God of Darkness. But thus far, no one has ever done so.

Ecosystem

Ecosystem of Hell varies by layer. However, the Surface layer is where devil civilization is. The Surface layer consists of one giant cave system, made from extremely hard, durable, red rock. Many cities and settlements can be found across the Surface of Hell, and lava pools break up the monotony from time to time. There are no plants and few animals here, with the only living creatures being devils and their pre-evolutions, as well as hellhounds, nightmares, and the occasional golem.

Climate

Hell is extremely hot on the Surface layer, and to most races, said heat would be unbearable. However, devils and their pre-evolved forms have unnaturally high resistance to heat and fire. Other levels have their own enclosed climate.

Fauna & Flora

No plants grow in Hell. Hellhounds and nightmares roam freely.

History

After the The Light-Dark War, Erebos and his devils were left needing a place to escape from the world and Evelyn's judgement. Erebos wanted it to be a realm of freedom and worldly desires, and so he created Hell, where devils would face no persecution for anything that happened there, save for severe crimes such as murder or serial killing. Over time, devils grew discontent with their place in the world, however, and some began to curse their father for how he'd created them, to Erebos's disappointment and grief. After many years of this, Erebos stopped watching over Hell, secluding himself away from his children and blaming himself for their misfortune. He let them do as they pleased, which gave all of devilkind the green light to take revenge on the mortal realm. To this day, Hell remains technically lawless, but there are overlords who ensure some semblance of order still remains.
