Duston
Duston is the only major settlement on the island of Glass, and is owned and operated by the Dunes family under the their patriarch Mr. Dunes.
Duston is comprised of a core of permanent buildings surrounded by a larger tent city. The Dunes, their mercenaries, and their close friends and supporters live in the structures, while the general laborers live in the tent city. Most shops, the local tavern, and other luxury services can be found in the permanent core, although a number of less official businesses pop up sporadically in the tent city.
Demographics
The population of Duston is made up of a mix of Skyborn, Greenborn, and Ashen. A small population of Serpent Riders recently joined the mix, although they are treated with suspicion and contempt.
Government
Mr. Dunes considers himself the mayor of Duston, although an election has never been held for the position. The Dunes family handles most affairs of trade internally, and collects taxes and enforces some sense of order. There are no official laws in Duston, but everyone knows the one golden rule that applies to everyone: "Your actions have consequences."
Industry & Trade
Duston is a small town of a couple hundred labourers and people in service jobs. Duston's main industry is resource extraction, as work men and women work to harvest, package, and ship sand and glass off of the island for use on other islands.
Guilds and Factions
Duston is controlled entirely by the Dunes family. The major inn, stores, taverns, and brothels are all owned by Dunes, and any other businesses pay frankly extortionary rent prices for the land they sit on. The Dunes maintain this status quo with a small army of mercenaries who care little for the people they hurt and only for the Slivers the Dunes can provide.
In recent years, a member from the United Labor Union traveled to the island and began spreading ideas like economic democracy and workers rights. Though the Dunes have cracked down hard on these ideas, they have as of yet been unable to silence their source.
Architecture
All the buildings of Duston are built with a combination of recourses brought over from other islands and sandstone from Glass. The architecture barrows partially from Skyhome design, only with more of a "frontier" astatic. Buildings generally don't stand higher than two stories tall, with the largest building belonging to Mr. Dunes and his family.
