The Imperium Of Man
The Imperium of Man is a galaxy-spanning interstellar Human empire, ruled by the Emperor of Mankind, believed by the Imperial Cult to be a living god. Branches of the Imperium include the zealous Imperial Cult, the bureaucratic Administratum, and the superhuman Space Marines. Croatoan
CROATOAN - Just A Feral World Climate: Tropical, Temperate Terrain: Jungle, Ocean, Mountains Population: Unknown While it shares a system with the capital, a vast majority of the surface remains completely unexplored. Officially, this is due to the dangerously aggressive wildlife that inhabits the jungles and marshes that cover most of the planet, as well as the massive predators that inhabit the seas. However, hiveworld folklore hints at a much darker explanation. There are whispers of a colonization effort by the High Lords to exploit Croatoan’s vast natural resources. Rumor suggests that the colony was monumentally successful, and provided the High Lords with the economic means to subvert the original local Planetary Governor’s administration through bureaucracy, bribes and kickbacks— at least until all communications from the colony abruptly ceased simultaneously. A handful of teams were dispatched from the hiveworld to investigate, each larger and better equipped than the last, but not a single one has returned and the High Lords have since turned their attention toward one another. -
Festris Prime and Festris Secundus
FESTRIS PRIME - The Hive World Capital Climate: Temperate, Polluted Terrain: Urban, Industrial, Wasteland Population: Very High Though not especially involved with the Imperial Cult, the High Lords of Festris pay their tithes and keep their heads down to avoid undue attention. The surface of the planet is a patchwork of sprawling slums, industrial centers, and landfills sparsely dotted with oases: huge walled off compounds with greenery, golden spires, and air scrubbers that highlight the stark contrast between the ruling elite and the subjugated peasantry living in the pollution and squalor below with security details and gun emplacements. Corruption is rampant in the form of gangs, cults, and criminal organizations, often bankrolled by different nobles to further personal agendas and squash competitors. The High Lords were comfortable and complacent until the Imperium began snooping around after receiving reports of xenotech trade, heretical cults, and worse— Imperial tithe evasion. Increased pressure from newly arriving Imperial forces has invoked a reactionary response from the High Lords, including widespread alien witch hunts and radicalization of members of the Imperial Church, demanding retribution and repentance. This shift in the dynamic has been met with resistance from less “legitimate” enterprises, whose ranks are often colored with xenos, pagans, atheists, and witches, adding duel to the fire. While the atmosphere of the hiveworld has always been paranoid, foreboding, and violent, the arrival of Imperial forces have amplified tensions many times over. Festris Secundus - The Capital’s Moon Climate: Inhospitable Terrain: Desert, Mountains, Industrial Population: Low A small moon orbits the capital. While sparsely populated and largely desolate, the moon is rich in natural resources and sprinkled with industrial compounds integral to the hiveworld’s economy, thus the high lords grip on the populace, as well as the Imperial war effort. Without the lunar mining facilities and fuel refineries, it would be impossible for High Lords to continue to exert dominance over the hiveworld and meet Imperial tithe demands. It is for this reason that a large detachment of paramilitary groups loyal to the High Lords are dedicated to the protection of these settlements, though some Imperial officers wonder to themselves if direct occupation would be more efficient. There are rumors that an ancient ruin lies buried deep beneath the surface, possibly created by the early Mechanicus, or perhaps by something much older… -
Torgvald
TORGVALD - “Blessed” With Contact Climate: Temperate, Tundra Terrain: Ocean, Mountains, Forests Population: Moderate The feudal worlds that exist throughout the Imperium are more or less kept in stasis. Typically, the population of these planets exist at a technological level far regressed from the greater Imperium. Planetary Governors are often stationed in orbit with strict orders or non-interference until the planet is deemed “ready” to join the rest of Mankind on a galactic level. Torgvald, however, proved an exception by way of circumstance. Shortly after developing gunpowder weaponry, the planet’s incubation was cut short by a Chaos incursion, belched forth from the death throes of the withering warp storms. The planet’s primitive defenses were quickly overwhelmed by doomsday cults and massacred by daemons. Rather than lose Torgvald’s resources to the perils of the warp, the Planetary Governor interceded-- contact was established for the first time between the feudal lords and the greater Imperium. Farms became factories, castles became bunkers, and knights brandished chainswords alongside peasant las-gunlines. After decades of bitter fighting, the incursion was all but pushed back. At last, the daemonic threat wanes, but tensions rise as the old order is challenged by the new. Reports abound of knight houses extinguished in a volley of las-fire as lords struggle to maintain order in their lands. The balance of power is shifting drastically. Nobility cries out desperately for Imperial intervention, but as the old peasantry captures more and more of the world’s industrial centers, the Planetary Governor struggles to keep the tithes paid and plays both sides of the conflict to ensure compliance. Meanwhile, remnants of the forces of Chaos seek to take advantage of the infighting and spread their vile taint under the guise of peasant revolts and insurrections. The Planetary Governor has issued an open plea for aid from the High Lords of Festris and local mercenary fleets alike, all while the stage is set for a bloodbath that could prove even more deadly than the apocalyptic wars of decades past.
