Cobalt
Cobalt, real name Jas Daltry, is a miner. What she mines is not stone or metal, but secrets, information, and favors. Remarkably talented with infiltration software and digital networking, she is also probably the most analog person on The Orion. From her perspective, there is no completely secure technology and the more you rely on it, the more you open yourself up to attack or manipulation. Because of this, Cobalt has no digital enhancements, modifications, or implants and carries as little technology on her person as possible.
While this makes Cobalt an odd-one-out, her fashion sense makes her stick out like a sore thumb. To hear her reasoning,
Before the death of Yo-Dime, even before Carbide’s activation, Cobalt was a regular at Sakura. She enjoyed the atmosphere and the raucous activity of the gang members and patrons, because this let her do her real work: Finessing anyone dumb enough to let their guard down out of their secrets, digital footprint, and any credits they aren’t likely to notice gone.
When Sakura came under new management, Cobalt came looking for a job at her favorite old haunt. Now she works for Carbide, tending bar and keeping an eye on the street-level business while pulling out any useful information she can. Unknown to her, this is much easier at Sakura due to the connection to The Ether. Carbide has tasked her with pulling any passive income she can, and so far she has been able to get established with man-in-the-middle skimming of corporate credit transfers. Courtesy of careless patrons with unsecured corporate phones.
Cobalt knows the score, though. The working people are not to be stolen from, extorted, blackmailed, or harmed by her actions in any way. They can be a foot in the door, but they cant be put in a position of hardship from their business at Sakura. Cobalt seemed happy with the challenge, and said that the fun is in the finding. She says that she usually deletes what she takes unless it is lucrative on its own or just interesting, there is too much work in extortion and blackmail. She says.
While this makes Cobalt an odd-one-out, her fashion sense makes her stick out like a sore thumb. To hear her reasoning,
“It feels like everyone is just trying to out-peacock each other, you know? So nobody considers little old me as a player in whatever game they’re playing.”In a world of glitz, glamours, and gauche color schemes, Cobalt dresses as disarmingly as possible. Simple form-fitting clothes in dark colors, no neon colors or light strips, just enough jewelry to be interesting, and her namesake cobalt contact lenses so blue they almost glow. The lenses keep attention on the face, so nobody notices what the hands are getting at.
