Lord Arran Tan Echen (a.k.a. Witherbones)
Father of Emelyn Tahn Echen . Keeper of the Crowning Stone at Crag Ayl and the Baron of Ayl. Vassal lord in the service of House Antyre.
Cautious, powerful, dying. Arran commands a great deal of respect among the Antari Highlanders, but knows full well that Carrion is circling him now. His child Emelyn Tahn Echen reigns from Echen Crag and he holds a prominent position among the lorekeepers and historians at Crag Ayl. His consorts have long since left this world, and many of his children have been lost to harsh winters or brutal conflicts between the clans. But Emelyn remains, as does his stalwart son Malnek Echen, and through them the future of Clan Echen remains assured.
His most recent diplomatic feat was to pacify the roaming Untamed Clan Eskir, who have long called the blasted highland hills within his domain as their own. Thanks to the negotiations with Jhorhald Eskir, Arran has confined the Clan to a singular area, built watchtowers in their territory to protect them from external threats, and exacted tax and levy from them in return.
However, his dealings with Clan Eskir would sow the seeds of his eventual demise. While visiting the Hillhomes of Eskir to discuss trade matters with their chieftain, Arran was surprised to see Jhorhald's brother Ulfvyr Tahn Eskir had returned, seemingly from beyond the grave. When Ulfvyr successfully incited the Eskir clan to take up arms against Arran and the lackeys of House Antyre, Arran raced to escape the violent mob lead by the two brothers. He even managed to get up on his horse before Ulfvyr finally managed to fight his way through Arran's retinue and slew the Baron with a single stroke of his sword Mercy.
So ends the tale of Arran Eskir, the Baron of Ayl.

Arran Echen has kept the peace in the Barony of Ayl for the majority of his reign. By elevating some of the Untamed Clans, he has reduced their tendency to raid one another (and the trade routes through Ayl) and has slowly shifted their nomadic ways into a more settled (and taxable) manner.
