Session 9: Duergar Standoff! Report
General Summary
"Leave now if you value your lives," the duergar leader yelled from her cloak of invisibility. Mi'tsuru'gi was still hidden by his own invisibility in the Great Hall of Duergeddin while Falkas and Brimble Knackles were in the trap-room of Dwarven statues. A game of cat and mouse, or duergar and owl, commenced with the heroes retreating, the duergar taking defensive positions, probing by Gil the owl. Finally, a duergar guard hurled his javelin as the Fey owl appeared near the ceiling. A hit from the javelin and Gil was no more, but as the duergar, now visible, moved back into the hall, Mitsu fired his bow from his invisible concealment and assassinated the grey dwarf. Then he ran to statue room to join his comrades. Probing the duergar position would have to await another day.
The heroes retreated to the giant mushroom cavern. The glow of countless fungi on the ceiling illuminated the several ledges and passages around the cavern's perimeter. The heroes went up to the dwarven sepulchers to ponder their fates, while Brimble ritually cast Find Familiar to replace the lost Gil. During Brim's casting, Mitsu and Falkas removed the rubble from a choked passage and were greeted by the stink of troglodytes in a cavern filled with rotting game meat and orcs, a troglodyte pantry. The familiar small river ran through this cavern and exited a passage to the south.
Brim's ritual brought a new familiar, a bat named Robin and now the three heroes and their new flying companion investigated the newly revealed caves. The trog stink drove them south, but quickly they happened upon a giant subterranean lizard, a white scaled monster, chained in it's cave. Mitus begain goading the lizard out and firing arrows when he could, but troglodytes attacked form the north and now the heroes were fighting on two fronts. While one troglodyte was defeated the other lept at Brim. Falkas ran to attack the lizard, but was brought low by it's slashing tail. While Mitsu and Brim confronted the remaining trog, Falkas tried to get away from the lizard, but another blow shattered his armour and brought him near death. As Mitsu and Brim destroyed the trog they turned to see Falkas's final moments as the lizard tore his legs from his body.
The two remaining adventurers fired into the lizard with firebolts and arrows and soon destroyed the amphibian. Mitsu approached the lifeless creature and fired arrow afer arrow into scaled dead head.
Two chests were placed behind the great lizard against the rock and from these Brim found two potions and thousands of silver pieces emblazoned with the stag of Bissel. Brim and Mitsu carried the remains Falkas and buried him under a rock cairn amongst the dwarven sarcophagi, a half-elf entombed in the Barrier Peaks.
What now for Brimble and Mitsu?
